Convertible Top Cover Fit

Just bought a restored 1964 BJ8 and the snap-on cover for the convertible top is too tight in one area, so it is almost impossible to pull the cover tight enough to snap it into place. I thought that the solution I found might be useful for anyone who has a similar problem with this Austin part. These snap extensions are canvas, black and can be ordered in varying lengths from Amazon for very little money: "Boat Canvas Extender Snaps Boating Accessories 5 Per Bag Improved Easy Release Tabs Black." I am going to use leftovers for a boat canvas cover where it is too tight in the corners.

When I lived in Texas, we'd put the car out in the sun, with the convertible top loosely draped over the car. As the top warmed up, it became more flexible, and we'd be able to snap it all in place. Left it there for an hour or so, then drive into the garage (or just left it outside after sunset.

Next day, the top had stretched enough to fit w/o problem.

Just a thought.

Great idea. I keep the car in a garage bay with a cover on it, but have only had it for a few weeks. The previous owner said that he had trouble with the one snap, but he also kept the car covered. So it's nice to have options. Thanks for the comment.

It's a good idea to keep the top erected when not driving. Helps keep it's shape and not get storage lines.

Another good idea. I like the clever call sign and the plate ID.

Thank you, Overdrive45, I have this exact problem and the extenders is a great solution for my top which is in great shape except it has shrunk about 1/2-1” short of being able to snap the side snamps.

Hi Tim,
I just installed 2 snaps this morning, and they work perfectly. Actually, I only needed one, but the other was added for symmetry. I was thinking about epoxying the extender to the cover, but it may be better to carry a couple of spares in the glove box.
