TR2/3/3A Control column turn signal cleaning

I have finally gotten my wiring somewhat under control and am now attempting to insure the turn signals work. The control column I'm using had been sitting for quite a while so I checked it before installing. There was no continuity for either the left or right turns and it was covered in gunk so I flushed it with brake cleaner to remove built up debris, checked it again and both worked. Now that it is installed the left turn works but there isn't continuity for the right turn. I suspect there may be contamination/corrosion on the right contact. Without taking the control head apart, is there any way to clean the contact? I have a control head that was taken apart by a PO and I really don't want to tackle that kind of mess. The control head in the car was not apart before installation so there shouldn't be any reason for a loose wire.

As far as the contacts inside the control head, the only way is to get inside of it. It is not really all that bad of a job. But it does require one to closely observe how it comes apart and goes back together. I have worked on mine while the head is still in the car but pulled up out of the steering wheel. Possible but it just makes it a bit harder to work on.

Yes it should. That function involves the shaft that extends out of the control head and down into the tube which the wires are enclosed in. There is a open slot in the tube and a raised ridge on the extension from the control head. These two parts fit together to make it cancel. On adjustable steering wheels the tube must be long enough to accommodate the extension if the steering wheel is in a "pulled out position".

Hi,

Thanks for the response. I will add that to my winter list. Its embarrassing to ride around with a blinker on!

Yes, I know the feeling.

one of our club members made up an award. It was a necklace with a blinking light on it. I was the first recipient. But I got to give it back to him when he was driving without his wife with him to tell him his turn signals were still on. Pay backs are great!

Triumph Standard strikes again. Or maybe Lucas. Anyway, I did not have a corrosion/cleaning problem. In wiring the turn signals from the control head in the car I referred to wire colors in the control head that had been taken apart by a PO. In an attempt to see if, perhaps, the wire for the right turn signal had broken when shoved down the stator tube I partially disassembled the control head in the car. That's when I noticed the wire at the center post of the turn signal (the one common to both the left and right turn) was different from the PO control head. Once I made the proper wiring connections, the problem went away. None of the wires on either of the control heads appeared to have been moved; all appeared original.

Good for you. Great to hear that someone solves a problem the easy way.
