MGB-GT Considering MGBGT

Buying groceries the other night the spousal unit spotted a nice looking maroon 73 MGBGT for sale. I looked at it in the gloom, and it seemed in good condition. It sits on wire wheels with safety knock-offs, and obviously drives as it doesn't live at the grocery store. I called on it and the seller is the second owner, he bought it in 74 with 3500 miles on it, and it now has 75000.

Before I call agian, I wanted to cycle a few things through here.

First what is a good condition daily driver like this worth? Second, how good a daily driver might it be? What troubles specific to the 73 MGBGT should I watch for when checking the car out?

According to my hopelessly outdated "old cars price guide" a '73 GT could vary from peanuts to 4K for a "nice one". (not show quality). Lately on Ebay they seem to be going for around 2000/2500. No particular problems associated with them outside of the normal LBC quirks but look for RUST. Rockers and sills expensive and a pain to replace. Likewise the kingpin front end is prone to wear and also costs pretty big bucks. Most all parts are available and it's really a very simple car to work on. Bob
 
He is asking 6K so I would have to talk him down a bit I guess. But I think I can get him down far enough if I figure in having to transport one in from wherever.

I will keep an eye on that kingpin.
 
Matt, The BGT is a great daily driver. Unless you live in a hot climate. I just sold a 90% Show Quality '74 BGT without overdrive. I sold it to a friend for $6000. The car could have easily fetched around $7000-8000 if I had been patience.

If the car is a WELL maintained all original car $4000-5000 seams about right. But sure to check if it has OVERDRIVE and RUST. Also make sure to check the engine oil pressure and compression.

BGTs can rust in the lower edge of the hatch where water has found its way under the weather striping. Make sure the chrome trim around the front windshield and rear hatch are in good condition because its a bear of a job to replace it plus its expensive !!.

An overview:

$5000-6000 : Well Maintained car with NO rust and Overdrive.

$4000 : Well maintained car with minimal rust or no rust and NO overdrive.

If the guy is asking $6000 hopefully we can rule out that the car could have rust or bad mechanicals.

That helps a lot. As far as climate, we aren't that far apart. I am up in Ft. Smith, AR. It would be sweet if I was able to do this and have it for the cruise as well.
 
Tony calims GTs are increasing in value, but I think that's just because he has a yard full for sale
 
chuck, they are! But right now, for $6000, it better be showroom quality! IMHO
