I'm having a bear of a time mating these two. I can get them together but can't get the teeth of the gearbox rod to mesh with the clutch teeth. Any suggestions? I am working alone.
It might just be the angle of attack. That, and a hand on the tranny's flange to twist it a bit for alignment. That's about all I can think of, assuming the clutch is aligned.
Hoe did you center the clutch disc when you installed the pressure plate? If it is not well centered you will have a hard if not impossible time getting them mated. If you don't have a plastic splined tool you can use a wooded dowel of the right size to fit into the disc splines. After that it's just move and push.
I assume you've checked to be sure the clutch disc is the correct part and with mating splines.
Just a reminder.... make sure you use steel dowel pins from the engine to the bell housing to help line it up.
I don't think this has anything to do with mating them, but it will help once you get the bell housing tightened down.
I don't know if this is the problem or not but if you wire the arm of the pivot shaft to the bell housing (Temporary) after you pull it forword this will keep the throw-out bearing and fork from binding on the input shaft. When you do this by yourself it's easy to let the fork move to far forward because the arm moved backward on you. If this happens you will never got the trans and engine to mate. Remember to remove the wire before you tighten the bell housing bolts.
Thanks all I got it. As it turns out the clutch was not quite centered. Another question, does anyone know what torque wrench settings the bolts holding the gearbox on need to be? It doesn't say in my repair manual.
It's a TR4 transmission. Somebody put in in long before I bought the car. According to my pictures the clutch slave cylinder arm goes in on the side where the flywheel is engaged by the starter if that is what you mean.
Have a look at this picture. Where the crossshaft goes through the bell housing....you see the drop arm for the clutch slave pushrod connection? Where is yours?
