General TR Connecting to Lucas switch grub screws?

Hi,

I have a Lucas push/pull on/off switch for my heater blower. The electrical connections are the grub screw type, like in the attached picture.

How do I make the electrical connections? If I stick a piece of wire in the slot and tighten the screw, I’m afraid I’ll shear the wire.

Triumph has been using those same connections for over 50 years. I just restored a 59 TR3A that uses those same connections. The only advice I have is to not use extreme pressure when screwing it down. Good and tight is good.

You could use this type of crimp on the wire to protect the end. They come in different wire sizes.

I tried soldering the ends of some wires but found that often the soldered end would not fit into the slot. So quit doing that.

I solder the ends to give the screw something to bite on...you have to shape them before adding the solder. That said, I don't think there is anything wrong with using the set screw directly on copper wire, although they will loosen as the copper slowly gives way over time...so you have to check the tightness every time you open the dash. I have never seen a wire "cut" by the set screw.

I have connected my heater using bare wire; I’ll see how well it lasts! As long as the wires don’t get pulled on, it will be ok.
