Connecticut title for old car- how do they transfer out of state ?

Hi

I am about to buy an expensive 1950s car in Connecticut,

it seems they do not have titles for that old of a car,
he does have the registration form for it,

So what do you do when you need to register it in another state ?
does it have to be notorized or anything ?

It will be later registered in California so I want to make sure I get it right

Thanks for your help

Re: Connecticut title for old car- transfer it to

We have the same thing here in New York. I believe all cars before about 1970 did not have titles. However, half of the registration certificate had an ownership transfer stub on it that was used to well, transfer ownership. That, and a bill of sale is all that is neccessary in NY. You'll have to check with the CA DMV to see if they will accept such an arrangement. They must have provisions for this, as I'm sure there are many other states besides CT and NY that didn't have titles way back.

Beaulieu,

As stated, you have to find out what California requires as proof of ownership and transfer.

You can probably find the forms and info here,

Beaulieu - make *sure* you've got the proper documents required by California. Individual state DMV offices even have different expectations - so go to your local DMV and explain the entire situation. You're probably OK if you have a valid, current Connecticut registration for the car, but best to check out *in advance*.

Re: Connecticut title for old car- transfer it to

I've imported two cars to CA without titles, one from Alabama (or was it Georgia) and one from Canada. What you need is the last good registration form and a bill of sale. Take these and the car to your local DMV. AAA cannot process it (at least not a few years ago). They will inspect the car, and hopefully the numbers match. If not, you go to a CHP inspection facility and get the numbers corrected (very easy actually) and then back to the DMV.

As with any car, get your insurance company to send you a temporary insurance form before you go to the DMV. It can save potential headaches. At the very least, take an insurance card from another vehicle to show you have general coverage. Most insurance companies cover a new car purchase for X amount of time so that might be good enough for the DMV office.

The last one I sent to CA, I sent the registration in my name, my bill of sale to the new owner (notarized), a copy of the bill of sale where I bought it & the last registration in the previous owner's name....new owner had no problem registering it.

Re: Connecticut title for old car- transfer it to

Hi Steve,
I did all the title work for my Superhawk at AAA earlier this year. It was an out-of-stater. AAA even issues lic. plates on the spot.

Re: Connecticut title for old car- transfer it to

AAA does most DMV processes including out of state registrations, but if the VIN doesn't match your paperwork then they can't touch it.
