If you do no other day-trips be sure to drive the Needles highway through Custer State Park. It's absolutely spectacular and should not be missed! I also recommend driving up to see Devils Tower but that's merely gorgeous.
 
And don't fail to hike up Bear Butte NW of Sturgis--if you think you can. I did it with a pal about three years back. Watch for snakes.
