Computer / Video Question

We recently bought a video camera that records to DVD. It works well and I "finalized" our first DVD last night. When the DVD is finalized, it creates an index with all the video clips and allows you to play the DVD on a regular player or computer.

I'd like to be able to convert one or all of the clips to a format (wmv, mpeg, etc.) that would allow me to view the clip on an application other than a DVD viewer. Also would like to be able to email clips and possibly edit.

Is anyone aware of any software that will do what I'm wanting? I'm a true rookie at this!

well... I've never used a ~single~ application that can rip from a DVD AND convert the format for you. Well, there is a single app that will do it, but it requires a bunch of little apps and codecs to be installed on your computer.

The method that I've used in the past is rather long and somewhat convoluted, but it makes use of OpenSource tools and codecs that fall into GPL (i.e. legally free software). All of which can be found on www.doom9.net

A quick google revealed some software you can buy that might do what you want ( https://www.mp3towav.org/dvd-to-wmv.asp ). I never used any of those apps, so I cannot say how well they work. Just as a heads up, don't expect to be able to use your computer while it converts formats, unless you have a multi-core/multi-CPU system and ~lots~ of RAM.

Incase you want to try and find some other alternatives, my google search parameter was "DVD to WMV".
