computer question

Ack. Sometimes I think a lot of time and money is spent just to "keep up with the Jetsons."

As Doc has said many times: Get it working like you want, then turn off the updates. I wonder if that applies to updating the hardware too!

Of course it does - but to a point. If you're really satisfied with what you have, then why bother messing with it.

On the other hand I know a lot of people that said their machine/OS was just fine and dandy, then they go use a new $350 Win-7 laptop and act as if they're using something from the 24th century.

I also know a lot of people that think their 30 year old TV set is every bit as "hi def" as a new 52" plasma, so...

Had Linux in it before which I like, but all my files are Windows format and with the other computers being Windows, too much trouble to constantly convert them to install into a Linux machine. Takes some time to understand it, but I like Linux for it's speed! Everything happens, like NOW!

With OpenOffice, GIMP, SAMBA and (sparingly) WINE, a Linux workstation can be inserted into a LAN and happily co-exist with Winblows machines, most common data file types are interchangable. Adobe even has a flash player for Linux. Bit of a task to get it to install but once it works, it's fine.

Just took an old P-4 "shoebox" Shuttle to task with a Fedora 14 install. Works as quick as a newer Core or Atom processor running an M$ O/S.

Doc, Fedora 14? I'm downloading it and taking it for a test drive! Sounds interesting! PJ
