I have a 120 gig external Dynex hard drive setup. It is a USB plug in with it's own external power supply. Can I boot from it with the appropriate program such as Linux? I would like to load it with Linux and jump to it when I want. Is this possible without any conflict with windows Vista which is in my desk top. If I can do this, I could also run Linux in my lap top If I choose to. PJ

Oh yeah, The jumpers are set to cable select. Do I have to set them to master to do what I want? Again, if it's possible.
 
The decision is made at boot: BIOS setting. If the BIOS supports boot from USB you're "in."
 
Yes it does Doc! I just have to change that drive to a boot drive in the setup and it will try it first. NOW, that drive has it's own power scorch, if I leave it turned off, will it bypass the USB drive and go to the regular boot drive, which will be number 2 in line, when I want windows? Also, will it boot from cable connect or do I need to change the jumpers to master?
 
If the device is off, the next one in line is used. No jumper changes, IMO. Try it and see.
 
I would just leave it as cable select. I have a couple of external drives that I swap between computers, and have not had any issues booting to them.

I have used a couple of version of Linux, the most interesting one is unbutu (sp?). It fits on a regular CD, and is pretty interesting as Linux goes.

I have Linux Core 6 on my shop machine and have tried to load it on my external HD. For some reason the install portion of the # 1 disk doesn't recognize the USB drive but recognizes the internal hard drives, (I have 2), yet the USB drive is recognized by the BIOs in the computer and will boot to that drive if I set it up to do that in the boot menu. Crazy.
 
nahh. That's likely Anaconda. It's quirky.
 
You know what Doc, Your right! It mentioned Anaconda in there somewhere. Ha! Is that part of Core 6, the install program or ???. I'm still, (and probably will be forever), in a learning process about Linux.

Anaconda is the installer. Try a Bit Torrent load.
 
Some of the Linux versions do have trouble with recognizing USB during boot. I would try another installer like the good doctor has recommended.

I consider myself a Windows guy, but I do find Linux interesting to play with. Not like Solaris. I just hate that program.
 
The various Linux distro's are now "tame" enuff they're nearly as end-(L)user friendly as the Redmond stuff. No real need to go all geeky if all ya want is to access Internet and run office software.

Cool, I'll email Adobe to get Linux versions of Photoshop and Illustrator. Oh, I might as well get Solid Works for Linux too. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif

I guess toying with OS2 v2.1 and BeOS made me a little gun shy. OS2 was 32 bit but only ran yesterdays16 bit Microsoft wares. Be had virtually no software for what I wanted. That’n I just don’t have the time at this point to learn everything again. I’m not against Linux, it’s just not for me presently. Is there really a Solid Works version for Linux? Was not long ago they would not even consider it. I understand they tell everyone to NOT install on Vista.
