I am giving my little niece my old lap top so she can play her educational games on it. Thing is, her games will not play on XP or later. This laptop only has a 20 Gig hard drive and a little over 500 meg of memory, which is ok for her software. Problem is, I had to re-format the hard drive due to an old file problem and re-install windows 98. This computer has been on the shelf for over 4 years. OK, after 98 was installed, it'll only register as a 16 bit program, and the screen resolution is either too small or too large with no settings in between and the screen colors are few. How, if possible, can I get this machine to run in 32 bit mode? Remember, I can't install a later version of Windows as her games won't work on them, plus the HD and memory aren't up to snuff anyway. You're gonna play Hades getting the warez for the 98 O/S, methinks. What machine is it?

It's an old HP lap top Doc. I'd say it's about 12-13 years old. It came with 98 in it when new and it worked well. I checked the mail and I'll get back to you. Gotta run outa town for the wife. Thanks Doc.

Was the Win98 disc from Microsoft or HP listed as a "recovery disc"? Sounds like you need to install the drivers specific to that laptop. The video driver, chipset, NIC, sound. If you don't have an HP disc, you might find all that stuff at HP's site.
 
Or at driverguide.com . They have a load of win98 drivers.
 
Boy, that's a 386....state of the art u to 15 years ago.
I think 2000 would work on a 16-bit.
You can't drag the windows bigger?
 
I suspect it's a driver issue.
 
Hey guys, My nephew, the family computer geek came over last night and put everything in order. You guys were right in saying,"The drivers had to be installed manually"! I tried to follow what he was doing, but gave up after 30 minutes. Took him about an hour to fix the problem. I thought this thing was about 10 to 15 years old, seems like it's more like 20 as it was in my wifes office when she sold her business 15 years ago. Oh well, it works the way it should now thanks to my nephew.
Doc, thanks for the intended help. I was going to hook up with you today and see if your input could fix the problem, but the kid with the brain in the family did his number on it and all's well. Thanks to all for your input. PJ
