Carla has a Lenovo laptop with W8 on it. She opened it this morning and the power lights, etc. come on BUT THE SCREEN IS BLACK. Nothing she tried did anything. It just doesn't work. Could she have somehow inadvertently locked the keyboard or something? Any suggestions will be really appreciated. Thanks.

Gary - was she waking it up after it was asleep? Or was it completely turned off, and she pushed the power button to turn it back on?

Tom

Don't forget Gary, it's under warranty before you experiment too much

I would think a locked screen would at least have a login box. If you can plug an external monitor in, that could narrow the problem a littlle. WAG an auto update is the culprit.

OK...Here's the best scoop I can get out of Carla. This morning she opened the lid and turned on with power button. Had normal desktop screen. We've been turning off (unplugging) our internet connection at night because someone has been parking by our house and accessing it at night. She plugged in the internet cable and used it for email, etc. Signed out of everything and closed the lid. Later...opened lid, plugged in to power source, at same time inserted a CD and NOTHING came up on the screen. It turns on now when lid is opened but the screen is blank. She tried Windows button "L" to unlock keyboard but didn't help. Don't know what else to say or think...

Lots of interlocking details there. Seems like the last thing she did was "signed out of everything and closed the lid" - so in other words, she didn't turn it off.

Here's what I'd do.

Be sure power cord is connected. Hold the power button down for about ten seconds. System should completely power off (a "forced shut down").

Then hit the power button again and watch what happens. Should come on in normal mode.

Edit: Also, not sure what you mean by "she plugged in the power source". So you've been unplugging the internet connection *and* unplugging the power adapter? If it was unplugged from power all night, maybe the battery ran down while it was in sleep mode.

Give it a shot. Let us know what happens after the forced shut down and normal restart.

Tom

Well...Took the battery out, held the power button down for 30+ seconds, reinserted the battery, opened lid and pressed power button and it booted up. Computers make me crazy !!! Thanks guys.
