about two weeks ago I tried to get on my computer and could not get on line...tried everything...zip. Called my server tech support...then had to take the afternoon off, close my shop..pain. waited till almost 4pm and guy calls'want me to still come?" he came and was convinced he took the job because he had been fired form the fast food industry. Rude, banged my stuff around and told me I had a funny looking dog??? I'm serious..anyhow after being confused for 45 minutes he called tech support and they were confused together. Finally figured out there had been"illegal activity" on my computer and I had been shut off?? Now he looked at me like I'm Uncle Pervy..said I either had to wipe my computer and offer proof of it or go by a new system?? I have spend almost two weeks getting my stuff straight and arguing with these folks. If it hadn't been for my son..and him being a Sharp tech. I'd have been in a bigger mess. I'm back up and don't have to rely on my Blackberry(pain) and can get back to working on my A. AND I called the rude techs boss and told him my dog was better looking than the tech...and smarter.

Ghost of Lucas past getting even with you for selling off your toys

Whole thing smells of a "harvester bot" or other spam 'bot infection, got into the machine and turned it into a drone. That would account for the "illegal activity" tag. Prolific email generation and you would never know it.

Some of the folks I've run into who pass themselves off as I.T. people are just flat-out dangerous. Trained simians would be able to take their jobs (and do better at 'em).

That was what I was thinking. It would seem that wiping or replacing the system is a little over kill. A good cleanup would have been more correct. Sometimes it is easier and quicker to format and start over.

That's usually the path of least resistance for th' "Geeks-fer-Hire" bunch. They don't give a rat's butt about your data or config. I'm sure they'd be more than willing to sell ya a new system as well.

*sheesh*

A hint.. Sunbelt Software.. They have a product, which I think is quite worthwhile.. Vipre....extensive, not expensive..

That's putting it diplomatically, compared to the way I'd describe it.

Examples:

1. Hard disk dies because it simply won't spin up. I call tech support, since the thing is still under warranty. They guy asks me if I tried reformatting it.

2. My Acer machine stops at initial boot-up telling me I've opened the box (yeah, so what?) I contact tech support and they tell me to do a Windows system restore.

3. When my kid was in school (Connecticut College), the tech support people would regularly tell students to reformat their hard disks when they couldn't solve a problem--often the students had no backups, or didn't even realize it would wipe everything. My son found himself as the impromptu tech support guy for his dorm, since the regular ones simply couldn't solve a problem or created bigger ones.

Sigh.

try bleepingcomputer.com

They're good for info, I'd say run TrendMicro's "Housecall", too. It's free and does a VERY thorough job of ferreting out the nasty stuff.
