This showed up on a Yahoo Group - comparing pit crews then and now - fascinating!

1950 and 2013

 
Pretty amazing. But I didn't remember regular pit stops ever taking over a minute.
 
Did that modern one include a re-fueling? Clearly the wheels took the longest (in the day).
 
First one was only a two tire change, probably another minute if they needed four. And did you notice the "jack" man seemed to struggle to get the front end up?? I noticed his legs dangling off the pavement a couple times before he was able to leverage the front into the air. But more guys and power tools are what seemed to make the difference with the 2013 change, one team per corner rather than one guy for all four wheels.
 
Considering the number of men on the 1950 pit crew and the technology they used, I am a little more impressed by that than by the 2013 crew.

:iagree: Yes,I'm of that thought also Walter. Don't get me wrong, the crews today are lightning fast, they should be, three guys doing the work of one, constantly going to training school for timing, speed and efficiency! Always dressed like they just came from the cleaners. Years ago the win was placed on the driver, not much on the pit crew. When we were running modifieds on oval tracks, we had three guys to do all the pit work. Change engines, rears, transmissions between races. When we went to the races we were clean and shiny, when we came home after the races, we looked like we had been drug through a grease pit. :highly_amused: I was just a kid then and grew up around race cars. I built my first roll cage for a 39 Ford coupe at age 13 with a new Lincoln welder my dad bought me. Memories, love them! :encouragement: PJ
 
Good video. I had to chuckle at how it's changed.
