Actually a good question! Wish I had a better answer. We used a synthetic as substitute on a 300 SL many years ago. Can't recall where we got it, thinking an upholstery guy we used ordered it from one of his sources.
 
I believe your best source would be someone who restores vintage furniture. We had a couch redone with horsehair a while ago, so I think it is still available.
 
If it is for a Mercedes, call 1 800 MB CLASSICS. They still have all the molded horsehairs for their seats.
