Hey guys;
My steering box number on my TR3 is 15642.
How close will this be to my commission number.
Has anybody checked this out?
My bill of sale is 77xxx, which is totally inaccurate for a 57 TR3.
Thanks for the help, Emmett

I really don't know, but I guess that is just a part number and will not change with the commission number.

I've never heard of matching a steering box number to a commission number. You're right about a 77,xxx number being too high for a '57. Isn't there a VIN plate on the passenger side firewall??? If not, then the engine number will put you within a few hundred of the commission number, and there is also two body plates above the battery that will put you in the ball park. The "EB" number will also be several hundred higher then the commission number.

Hey Art- None of your very good suggestions will work.
This was a very rough car that I bought in boxes. There are no comm. #s, nor any body #plates. The engine is 60091E, and the tranny is cc110463.
Its a genuine small mouth, smooth doors, ect.
The steering box number is not a part number, but seems to be a stamped serial #
I understand that the engine #s are not the same but close to the Comm#, but why would there be any/much varience in the steering box #? This is the earlier one piece steering and I don't think this steering box would have been used in any other model, nor do I think that many production units would have been scrapped for defects.
I think the PO several owners back just used a title that he had from a salvage car. I'm doing a frame off resto, and would like to have a more accurate #.
Thanks Emmett

I've not heard of matching steering boxes to commission numbers, but the number on your steering box, 15642, was a correct commission number for a small mouth TR3 of January 1957 build.

Front disc brakes/ separate master cylinders and the Girling diff were introduced at car TS 13046, so if yours has these, then the steering box could be an indicator.

If you can find the EB prefix body plate, originally on the firewall above the battery, in any of the boxes of parts, then you might be able to pinpoint the car's original commission number via a British Heritage birth certificate. You could need such a document to eventually get it registered correctly, but local authorities are best to advise.

Your engine block, if TS60091E, is from a TR3A of about October 1959.

Merry Xmas,

Viv.

The small mouth tends to belies the engine number TR3A assumption. My engine # is TS65973E and is the original engine. Trannie and OD are not original to the car. My commission number is 65750 which puts it in the middle of the 3A range. I can't find a number on the steering box. Lotta help I am.

Good luck Emmett, Tinkerman

Hey Dick;
The car has ALL of the physical traits of a late tr3 15,600 to 22041.
I just wondered if the long one peice steering box serial number would compare with the actual commission number.
I'd hoped that you or Randall or one of the more involved TR3 nuts, might be able to confirm or deny this possibility.
If there is a relationship between these numbers this could be very important in identifing all early TR3s.
Hopefully someone can solve this puzzle.
Merry Christmas, Emmett

Emmett,
Where exactly on the steering box is the number. We could all then have a look on our to see if we have a number there.
Nick

Nick:
I took down the number when I had the machine shop install new bearings and races.
When I look at the mounted steering box I can't see it anywhere. Sorry, but thanks for trying to help.
