Commision numbers???

Hello

I need some help here figuring what I have. I bought the car on Ebay last year and have very little history. I know its not a numbers matching car. The tube was mimosa yellow.

Commission # CC75920LO color 55, Laurel green trim 11 built Oct 71.
Engine # 68927E
Body # 68927CC plate on the R/H fire wall.
The car was last registered in Missouri.

The car is generally in good shape meaning the only rust I can see is around the rear deck where the top is. The drivers floor will also require replacement. The frame is straight and clean. The paint is about 10-15 years old.

Thanks
Steven

Steve- the numbers aren't suppose to match .It was the way they were built
72?

Are you sure those are the #'s

Steven,
The Commission # is early '72. According to the TRF catalog, Commission # CC67893 was the last '71, but Triumph used CC75001 to start the '72 model year, a jump of over 7100. I'm pretty sure they 'jumped' the engine number's too, probably because new pollution specs required them to be kept straight.
But as DNK says, Triumph didn't try to match car/engine/body numbers. As long as the engine wasn't swapped out, they're usually close, but not the same. Triumph probably didn't 'jump' the body shell numbers, so that would account for your body # being 7000 or so lower. What's the number on the plate on the left side of the windshield frame? Nice looking car in any case.

TR Commission #s might be a good Wikipedia topic for folks with known original cars to sort out.

Thanks Jeff,
I will have to look for the number on the winsheild frame.

I think this car was pieced together. Body, frame and engine. The only thing that matches the data plate is the overdrive. The wiring seems to be from a 1971, Hazard switch with relay, The body, 73+ the reason being the cutout for the steering column at the firewall uses the foam not a grommet. I ordered the grommet from the RF and there’s no way that it’s going to fit.

"Pieced together" seems a likely possibility. What puzzled me was:

I won't deny that it could have happened, but I don't think I've ever seen any two numbers that match perfectly, especially body and engine numbers!

Another thing: admittedly I'm not as well-versed on the TR6, but most other "Federal" 1972 and later model year Triumphs (Spitfire and GT6) had "UE" engine suffix letters to indicate a US-spec engine. Any TR6 owners know for sure if this practice occured on the TR6 as well?

You could always spring for a BMHIT build certificate based on the commission number and see what comes back for the other numbers. On the other hand, you might not like what you see. If it's a decent car as-is or after whatever needs to be done, enjoy it and don't worry too much about its...er...history! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Andrew- I'm with you, what are the chances that those 2 match. If it was German I would say possible. British,Ha

Your question prompted me to check my numbers. I have a 74 TR6 from ebay with no history. The windsheild number matches the number on the door post CF22842U May 1974. The block number is CF23272UE. According to the VB parts catalog, the numbers are valid for a 74. I'd post a picture, but don't know how.

...is this another "Pedro" vehicle...those can't be Quebec or Missouri Palm trees in the background...can they??

Last registured in Missouri, Bought it from a guy in Naples FL. Had it shipped to Montreal. The picture is from the Ebay listing in Florida. It spent last winter in my heated garage and is now up on stands due to a differential mount cracked. It might get on the road some time in july.

Steven

PS, I don't know who the guy is in the back of the picture

The easiest way to post a pic in the body of your post, not as an attachment, does require a little bit more work. Have the photos hosted on another (Free) photo site, or if there is room, in the members pictures area. I use https://www.photobucket.com, but there are plenty to choose from. Once the photos are hosted elsewhere. You can copy and paste the address for that photo (look for an 'IMG' prefix address) directly into your post and the BBS will automatically link the image from the other site into your post. You can do that through any of the reply options without using file manager.

It will then look like this....

...and shameless, too....

Nice cars though.

If they could only speak....of course you would NOT like what they said about accidents and abuse!!
I can't blame you for being curious, but have you thought of a heritage certificate? It might give you more than conjecture...
