Czar Nicholas II sent photographer Sergei Prukudin-Gorsky on a tour through "all the Russias". The photographer used a three-plate method, requiring the subjects to remain still for several seconds. From 1909 to 1915 he recorded thousands of scenes across the continent.

Quite a collection of pictures, as Russia moved from the Czar's Empire, into WW1, and Revolution.

Many of these are now in the Library of Congress.

The color in those pics are of a higher quality then these pics done during WWI by the French. There are hundreds of photos on this site, and if you read down and click on "Lumiere brothers", it will describe the process, which is different then the Russian pics. The WWI pics look more like hand painted colorizations that are done on black and white photos.

Thank you for sharing. Amazing color for its day. It must have been perceived like my comparison of black/white TV to Color TV. Milton Berle to Bonanza sticks in my mind.
