My TR6 is a pain to get started, once warmed up, it starts and drives fine.
I know there is not a real choke, but a cold start bar in the carbs. what do I need to do to get this car to start easier?
I pull on the choke lever, the cables that go to the carbs are functioning fine. What do I need to do?

You mean that there are different manuals for Bentley's depending on what color they're painted?? And isn't this the Triumph Forum?? :wink: LOL
 
I found out this morning that my poor Herald is also a bit cold-blooded, especially when it's only 10 degrees Fahrenheit. I had to jump-start the poor little thing. I suspect that changing out the 20W-50 this weekend for a lighter oil might help.... :wink:
 
A couple of things come to mind. #1 would be a tune-up and #2 would be to make sure the fast idle for the choke is set properly. And I guess #3 would be to keep your foot off the accelerator while cranking the engine when using the choke. That actually leans out the mixture.
 
OK... I will check out tdskip's link, also will not depress accelerator
(seems like I did figure that it did pop more when the foot was off the footsie)
The fast idle does work....
A tune-up will help maybe,but the car does start right away once started for the day.
This leads me to think the cold start bar in the carb is not flowing the extra fuel as it should
I'll check out the link and fool with the car tomorrow...

Don't overlook the fuel pump. My all of a sudden hard starting engine - long cranking before lighting up reluctantly - was cured with a fuel pump rebuilding kit install. It too, would run and start just fine if warmed.
 
THAT is what I have been suspecting all along.
I have an electric fuel pump lying around, I think I'll stick it in-line and see if there is an improvement. If it is, then problem solved.

If you have a pump with a priming lever, give it a few pumps to get the float bowls full before you turn the key.

The lever was what gave me the direction. It gave no resistance or "sucking" sound while pumping. The pumps diaphragm, while not torn, was super thin and ridiculously pliable all around the center washer. Not sure, but possibly it was caused by today's gasoline.
 
well I went out there and did NOT touch the gas pedal and just pulled the choke out and hit the starter.... It started right away after only a couple seconds of cranking.
I guess that is what I needed to do..... KEEP MY FOOT OFF THE GAS when starting first start of the day.
Well I am still getting acquainted with this car and so far I am liking it!

Good. One thing, you said about the priming lever, I'd like to address. The fuel pump works off a eccentric lobe (not a lobe for a tappet, though) and the resistance or lack of it depends upon what position the arm of the fuel pump happens to be resting on the lobe at the time of the manual priming. Don't worry about it.

There is some small advantage to holding the pedal down a bit while pulling the choke out. Only that it makes the choke easier to operate, though.

One way to deal with that is to setup an account at PhotoBucket (or any of the similar services) and upload your photos there. It's free as long as you don't succumb to their many offers to "upgrade". PB will automagically resize as you upload to their site (and their limit is larger than BCF); then you can insert as many links as you like into a single post using the
image.gif
button.
 
Notice, TR3driver said "while pulling the choke out"..not while engaging the starter.
 
OK... I'll try again with the pic hosting.... I went there once, didn't work out.
I'll try some other host.
And thanks to all for the tips.
I like the priming idea.
I don't see why it wouldn't hurt to use the primer.
Now I just need some dry weather so I can DRIVE!!

Right, BCF won't accept HTML in posts. Instead you have to use a simpler (and safer) code known as BBCode. Here's a brief article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBCode
