I ordered a Lucas coil from Moss a couple of days ago. (I ordered another several months ago, received it, and gave it away as a gift.) Today the coil arrived, but it was not a Lucas but an Intermotor coil. I've had no experience with Intermotor coil. Has anyone out there had experience with them and an opinion about them?
 
If Moss sold the coil to you as a Lucas part I would contact them and ask for the Lucas part.

Intermotor makes/distributes all sorts of aftermarket parts for British cars. I have used a few of their components but not a coil. (I'm a Bosch Blue person).
 
Apparently, Intermotor is the new Lucas, at least until someone else picks up the license to the Lucas name:

I'd want to double-check the primary resistance though, just in case someone did make a mistake and pick up the wrong part.
 
Randall -- I discovered that Intermotor is the new Lucas while searching the Internet. It may not make a lot of difference, but I will return the Intermotor coil and order, before they are out of stock, a standard "Lucas" coil from another supplier. (My car currently has a Lucas Sport coil, and it runs well, but I'm trying to get things back as close to stock as possible.)

I realize that the Intermotor coil may be exactly the same as the Lucas coil, just re-branded, but opinions expressed on other Triumph sites lead me to believe that there is a difference.
 
With apologies to Shakespeare's famous rose, perhaps a coil by any other name may still perform like a Lucas coil.
 
That's a scary thought! The last new "Lucas Sports" coil I bought lasted less than 2 years, and left me stranded on the side of the road.

I've had better luck with "no name" coils from K-mart!
 
My Lucas Sport coil came with the car, and I have been driving it for almost 3 years with no coil problems. The Sport coil has been on the car for at least five years.

But I plan to replace the Lucas Sport coil with a Lucas stock coil. I'll keep the Sport coil in the trunk in case the stock coil fails me.
 
I gave up on originality with regard to coils. I am a firm believer in the Bosch Blue coil... but only the ones from Brazil. You can get them from Jeff at Advanced Distributors for what is a good fair-market price.
 
I concur with Doug on the Blue Coil, it has been great and I also got mine from Jeff at Advanced Distributors.
 
Picking up on Randall's earlier suggestion to check the primary resistance of my new coil, can anyone tell me what the resistance specifications are for the TR3A primary winding? There are no specifications given in any of the technical specs. I have.
 
The primary resistance (between the two side terminals) should be around 3 ohms.

If it is much less than that (around 1.5 ohms); you have a coil that is designed to be used with an external ballast resistor, such as those used on later TR6.

Many thanks. I suspected that was the case, but didn't trust my "hunch." That helps a lot, as usual.

Do I also need to pay attention to the resistance specifications for the secondary windings?
 
No need to worry about secondary resistance, at least not for whether the coil is suitable for your car.
