Coil problems

I finally changed the starter out in my 79 XJ6, changed all of the wires to it as well, just to be on the safe side. I picked up a rebuilt Lucas with a lifetime warranty at Autozone for about $115! Way cheaper than any of the Jaguar specialists I called. I guess it pays to shop around!

Anyway, now on to the coil. Do any of you know what wires should be coming into/leaving the coil? The DPO has done some creative wiring repairs, and my wiring diagrams aren't very clear on the matter. The way it sits, I've got two white/black wires coming out the - side, and three green wires and one white wire coming in the + side. I think two of the 'green' wires end up spliced at white/blue, and one is just plain white. Any suggestions? I am getting a spark, but I don't know if it is a strong one. Thanks for any help!

Hello James,

the XJ6 is too new for me, but Lucas conventional wiring is, white, ignition supply so would usually go to coil +ve, (negative earth vehicle), white\black from the coil -ve to the distributor.
Green is normally a fused auxilliary supply fed from the ignition.

I would recommend getting a workshop manual if you plan doing any work yourself on the car.

I have been working off of the Haynes Manual. It leaves a bit to be desired. I bought a workshop manual on ebay a while back, but when I got it, it turned out to be a series I XJ book (Anyone want to trade?). Useful for some stuff, but when it comes to the fuel injection system in my series II, quite useless. I wish I had carbs!!

Anyway, I got the beast fired up yesterday for the first time in three years. I drained the fuel tanks, blew out the lines, changed the plugs, changed the oil, cleaned the contacts in the distributer, hooked up the new battery, put new gas in it, ran it through, changed the fuel filter, etc. I had been keeping the cylinders lubed up the whole time it was in storage with some regular motor oil.
It only ran for about 10 seconds, but it ran!! Now I can't tell if my problem is a weak spark, or if it is in the F.I. system. The wiring is pretty well bodged all over the place. Looks like I will be spending a lot of time in my garage with a volt-meter and some stickers to label everything. I'll keep on plugging away!

The white wire to + should be 12 volts. The white /black stripe wires should drive the electronic tach and also connect to the ignition amplifier. (another white wire should connect to the ignition amplifier from the + coil) The green wires are not Jaguar provided so I cant tell you what they are. Somemone has been messing with your wiring. My experience with with Auto Zone starters and alternators is that if you enforce the lifetime warranty, you will being trading componenets frequently as they do a terrible job of reconditioning (should be called first order repair). I would rather buy a better product that you will not have to exchange many times. The best solution is to get the new reduction gear starter. At twice the price of the Auto Zone it is a real bargain and will allow your XJ6 to start much easier and quicker.
