Cockpit trim

I have a panel kit coming for my 63 midget. Actually scratch the year as that is an item of contention. Car is a "GAN 1".
The trim piece above the dash is foam filled and covered also in the same color as the dash. Elsewhere around the cockpit the top edge is bare. Is there supposed to be a trim piece that is likewise wrapped in this red vynal, or left aluminum, is there any at all? My car did not come with any.

Jay

I recently disassembled a '62 Sprite (see "The Spridget Project" at https://www.raysmg.com). My car had a full cockpit surround; aluminum wrapped in black vinyl. I do not believe the pieces had ever been redone, but can't be positive.

My dilemma is this; the black vinyl is so nice that I hate to destroy it, BUT, it's a race car theme and bare (polished) aluminum would be more appropriate, especially since much of the under bonnet area and cockpit will have aluminum sheeting.

Then again...the vinyl has REALLY protected the surface of the trim. A little solven to get rid of the goo and it will be ready to polish.

Thanks Ray,

Now I just have to find a set and I'll wrap them in the red vynal. That'll look good against the black bodywork.

For some reason every single car I've seen has been missing them, made me think they came that way.

And a bead of the piping matching the seats/panels along the top edge, IIRC.

A bead of the piping matching the seats is supposed to be there also Dr. ?

Uh, I may have to forego that one,, interior is getting away from me as it is because I don't care for the white piping in a black car so was going to have them re-done with black piping.

Schtupp a black one in there too, then. It does kinda "finish" th' look of it.

I used white for it in the MGB I have. But the car is OEW.

Can't recall my AFSC off th' top but "Aerial Combat Documentation Photographer" was the "title" it had. Now they're Combat Camera Photojournalists. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Jay, Neither my '61 or '62 has any trim on the cockpit surround, other than the padded bit above the dash, while the '63 is trimmed all the way. I know these are all original. I looked in Terry Horlers' book, and the GAN1 and GAN2 cars are shown both ways, so I guess it's all a matter of your preferences.

I think the car would look more "finished" if it were there so I'll see what I can find. Laminated strips of thin ply epoxied to each other clamped in place would probably get me by too. Kinda like building those cursed wing tips on my 1/5th scale Spitfire.

My AFSC is 1C171, but they have changed I am sure since you were in Dr. of course I carry about 8 SEIs (special experience identifyers) also..

Combat photography has changed lots in just recent years as you can imagine. Predators, other UAVs etc. Every see a Predator burn on your parallel? Spectacular! but I wouldn't toast any marshmellows in that flame unless I wanted three headed children.

Jay, am I to understand that you don't even have the basic aluminum trim for the cockpit? I thought you were asking whether or not the aluminum should be covered or left bare.
Jeff

The trim is available new. I gave my last used set to someone.

Jay,
Jeff cited Horler's book as a reference for this item and I have to agree; the NAMGBR Concours judges carry a copy and reference it often for good reason.

I'm too lazy to transcribe so I scanned page 56 and cropped out all but the part in question.

Here ya go:

Hope it helps,

Awsome,

Thanks Ray.

Jack I think I have already found a set, the internet can be an awsome tool!

Unfortunately I found out today that although my Seat Covers are here, the panel kit is on back order. Darn.

At least I can get the Windshield set into its new glazing and installed on the car monday.
