Cockpit exhaust fumes

Have scanned prior posts seeking this topic (145 to 95 or thereabouts) but have not encountered a discussion pertaining to exhaust fumes in the cockpit. If such a topic is there and I have missed it I apologise.
Anyway, here is my problem. Driving with the top up and the windows down (or even cracked open) I am constantly beset by the smell of exhaust. I know it is being pulled into the passenger compartment by the slight vacuum created by the air rushing past the window openings.
I have checked and tightened all the usual "suspects" . My instinct says it is being pulled past the trunk seal and that said seal does not press tightly enough against the closed trunk lid.
If I turn my nose to the rear shelf while driving the smell is stronger there. It is irritating in the extreme to have the odor as it also clings to clothes.
I have checked and retightened the exhaust pipe joints and the front manifold and the taillights have all new gaskets. All body holes except for the drain holes in the spare tire well are closed. Funny thing is ..my BGT does the same thing when the rear windows are cracked open. Any ideas or trick treatments for this? Thanks.
Sorry, forgot to mention that this is a '69 TR6.
 
I wish I could give you a solution, but all I can give you is some reassurance that your not alone. I had the some problem with my TR4 for years. I never did find the answer to solve the fume smell and the car was sold this past fall. The fumes were never really strong, but it was always noticable. I replaced just about everything I could think of. As I said I never did find the leak, but at least you know your not alone. Good Luck

I have the exact same problem. I am told that this is a "vortex" effect caused by the exhuast dumping out too close to the car. The fix, obviously would be to lengthen the tail pipes.

I personally don't like the stuck out exhause pipe look, so I keep the lengths as they are.
 
It's a common problem on many cars. With Ferrari Testarossas, there were actually a couple instances of owners passing-out at the wheel at high speeds (85+ MPH) because those side louvers literally directed all rear exhaust emissions into the cockpit.

Open your fresh air cowl vent, so that you're getting healthy (okay -- semi healthy) air in the cabin.

[/ QUOTE ]By any chance, is it an aftermarket "performance" exhaust system such as a Monza? I've had this problem on cars with such exhausts in the past, but NOT with stock exhaust systems. Just a thought....

Yikes Sammyb, LOL, you have painted a picture of a Testarossa driver passing out out @ 85-seriously not funny, but, well "funny". **** Italian exotics.

A pipe 6" longer cured everything for me.........
Then I took it back off.......(Looked like crap)
So I choke & my eyes burn.....Pretty stupid right?
 
We've got a Strebo system on our 250, and with the top up, we get gased. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif I just keep the top down as often as possible. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

Actually I have removed the top completely leaving only the bottom header rail in place (a spare) and use only the tonneau.
 
I to have the same problem. I noticed a black tinge on back of car due to some oil burning. I waxed it all off, but when I opened the trunk lid, low and behold you could see a funnel stain where gasket had a one inch gap. This proceeded into the trunk.The whole trunk compartment was an exhaust stain on the red paint. Cleaned it all up. I put in a new trunk gasket, with the seam at the top side of opening. I then greased gasket and adjusted lid to fit compressing all the way around lid. This greatly reduced but did not eliminate my smell. Hopefully this may help reduce your fumy clothes!
