Ok I’ve got a weird transmission problem.

The tranny is an O/D unit that I picked up on ebay for a song. But when I installed it I started having problems.

If I drive like a little old lady it runs great. But the minute I try to shift I get all kinds of clutch slippage. I mean the engine will rev high but I’m going nowhere. It’s not until I ease off the throttle that it starts to catch and then I’m off.

Likewise at speed whenever I want to engage the overdrive it seems to be working great.

Now I farmed out the tranny swap to a local shop, because I just didn’t have time to do it myself. I noticed the problem right off the back when I got it back but there where other issues that needed to be addressed first to properly diagnose the problem. Now that most of those have been addressed it’s pretty clear that it is a tranny issue?

I just starting having similar problems a week ago Bret. Take my foot off the gas and it sounds like it dies. Give it gas and it slips and goes into gear. When I spoke to Twist and Esposito, they both think it is the "O" rings in the Solenoid and the pressure relief valve. They also mentioned the 95% of OD problems are usually cheap and simple. I purchased all the new "O" rings and installed them. Fluid looked and smelled pretty good but one ring in particular was really flat and worn. I have a few other things to address under there but I will be reporting back as soon as I can. I think it was a whopping $12 on "O" rings and a few gaskets and filters.
 
Run it up to about 2500 to 3000 in third gear on a flat or slightly up hill road and punch it. If it slips the chances are that it is the clutch. If it doesn't it is probably that the OD is not developing enough hydraulic pressure to keep the cone clutch engaged. You might also flip it into and out of OD several times while trying to accelerate under the same conditions. Clean the OD screen and relief valve/solenoid before you go pulling the power unit and making a big deal out of this.
