TR2/3/3A Clutch slave "return spring"?

I read somewhere that someone was driving their TR3 successfully without an external clutch slave return spring? Well I just snapped the end off the spring when installing it. Can the car be driven without said sping if the pedal returns OK without it? Will order a new one in any event.

If you drive like that, you may have the throwout bearing in contact with the pressure plate (spinning as a result). Not per se damaging, but don't do it if it can be avoided. Any spring that puts pull on the fork will work.

I ordered a new spring. Wonder if the throw out bearing contacting the pressure plate would make an audible noise?
