I finally got the wheel bearings, bushings, fuel tank and electrical working! I was even able to take it for a short drive today! If it wasn't for the short drive today I think I might have put it up for sale.

So, the drive was short due to a slipping clutch. No worries, I'll replace it.

Question is this: While I have the engine out is there anything else that I should think about replacing while I'm in there?
 
I would go for the motor mounts, trans mounts, good time to look at hoses in the coolng system how are the ujoints ?basicly all the stuff you have to disassemble to get at the clutch don't forget the t/out brg. new oil in the trans the list goes on on on
 
Ok, here is my list:

1. clutch, pressure plate, and throw out bearing.
2. water pump.
3. rear trans oil seal.
4. engine mounts.
5. trans mounts.
6. valve cover gasket.
7. clutch master and slave rebuild kits.
8. oil pan gasket.
9. good cleaning to remove the extreme amount of grease, oil and dirt!

Any additions would be greatly appreciated. I would really like to only pull this engine out once. Actually I would really like to drive this thing for a few days before something major breaks!

Think about the oil pump. Engine must come out to replace it as well.
 
Don't miss the little bushing in front of the tranny in the motor. I know it is a pain, but you will never regret any detailing, including the repainting of the engine bay.
 
You know I have never had to replace one of those little brass bushings that the shaft pokes into in fact it is not even a bushing really it is more like a spacer as the shaft rides on the transmission front bearing in my opinion.
 
Ok, I'm heading down stairs to pull out my engine and tranny. This will be my first time, but it seems pretty straight forward.

Ok, engine and tranny are out! Here are a few additional things I've found:

Tranny mounts are shot
rear main engine seal is leaking
The clutch was actually in pretty good shape, the problem was all the oil all over it from the engine.


is the clutch fork supposed to have play in it where it is pinned to the housing bell?
 
There is a brass bushing for the pin spacing. That may be worn, or also check the pin for wear. It should be quite "wiggle-free", though I don't think a little is cause for alarm unless you see excessive wear!

and there is about an 1/8 of an inch play
 
It should come out quite easiliy, what should be holding/keeping it in place is a cotter-pin through the bottom of the pin!
 
Yes to clutch fork play.

Rear engine seal is not a seal but a spiral that is to push oil back into the engine when it is running.

Think I would pull the pan and check the instalation of the rear spiral seal cap peice at the very least.

Now is the time to do an engine rebuild if it is out. Have a machine shop do the head and check all the bits for sizes and such.
 
Jack, Keep in mind that I have a 79 midget. There is definatly a seal back there.

You are correct, this would be the perfect time to rebuild the engine. However, I am not ready to put the time or money into right now. I REALLY want to drive it for a little bit!

Say "NO!" to boats! If you are reluctant to spend time/money on the CAR, you'd be in REAL trouble with a boat! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif

If the clutch driven plate measures out to have over 50~60% material left, wash it down with "Brake cleaner", replace the rear main seal and the tranny input shaft seal, check all the clutch internal bits for 'serviceability' and reassemble it. Keep the new parts to-hand for a REAL teardown/rebuild at a later (winter) date.
