Clutch question

Thought about purchasing a new assembly;
cleaned up the old one and it really looks ok(?)
It's a Borg & Beck from England. Inked letters state
march 7,1974 with a number underneath of 47393.
Have to believe that's when it was produced and model #.
The teeth are in great shape & it has 15MIX stamped on one of them. The flip side shows a few small ridges formed on the outer band of the pressure plate.
I'm think of replacing the disc only; don't know the thickness
when new. Car had 14500 on the odometer. Don't have any history on rebuilds.
Any thoughts ?

It is one of those that do you want to take it apart if it doesn't work.

I would guess most of the time the plate is fine but if it is that old then there could be metal fatigue but then again sometimes the old stuff last forever.

What type of car is this for.

Makes perfect sense to me, Harry; although depending on how big the ridges are, it might be worthwhile having it "reconditioned" (to grind the friction surface flat again).

In fact, I'd probably have the friction plate relined as well, if it appears to be in good shape otherwise. There are just too many defective new parts these days, several of our local club members have had issues. Ask at your local independant FLAPS or machine shop. They can probably reline for half the price of new.

Much has been written on this forum, search.
Old Borg was good and from what you say would be inclined to put it back in. Can't comment on specifically on yours, someone will. From what I take replacement of original TO bearing is fine and upgrades are problems. Recently (few days ago) I read some have just had the old friction plate redone at car parts place. As far as the odometer on any of these cars, yes my sister is a virgin.

It's a 67 irs. What is a FLAP ? Im not up on text messege lingo !

It is either the thing you install on the car to keep mud off the rockers, or your friendly local auto parts store - I forget which is correct.

Sorry. To me, FLAPS = Full Line Auto Parts Store. In other words (IOW), not one of the places like AutoZone that only carry parts they can sell within 90 days.

NAPA would qualify, but I've had better luck with places like https://www.hapsautoparts.com/ (who oddly enough have a LUK clutch set in their website photo)

Check the disk for amount of lining left before the the rivets are exposed and begin to hit the cover. Less than 1/16", replace or reline the disk.

When new, Borg&Beck clutch discs have between .045 and .060 lining when measured from the friction surface down to the rivets. I'd replace if below .030, just because you're there already + they're inexpensive.
The pressure place fingers can be resurfaced using a three inch disc grinder. These are available from Sears and can be chucked up in a drill press. Works well in removing the grooves caused by the t/o bearing.

Thanks Beefeater-
Decided to replace the clutch disc as a precaution. Had the face of the pressure plate machined smooth. Fingers showed no wear !
