clutch question

I have a 76TR6 with 65000 miles on it. Lately I have noticed an intermittent clack coming from under the car while cruising down the road. If I gently place my foot on the clutch pedal the clack goes away.
After investigating further with the car on the hoist I found that there is play in the throw out bearing lever. There is play in the slave cylinder pushrod allows the lever to float very slightly. With the engine running the lever traveling slightly forward causes this loud metallic clack inside the bell housing.
This cannot be a good thing. What could be happening here? Would it be an idea to insert washers between the slave cylinder and its mount to eliminate the slack and resulting freeplay? I have as well considered attaching a spring to the lever to keep it from floating? Has anybody experience of this type and have any suggestions?
I should add that I have noticed that I can hear the throw out bearing while seated in the car, alongside a building or in the garage etc.
I have replaced and/or rebuilt just about everything on the car except the clutch. Am I faced with the inevitable clutch replacement as a winter project or can I cheat a bit with some adjustments.

It could well be the throw out bearing. When you say you hear it, is it a loud or soft sound? A chatter or a continuous noise?
If that is in fact the problem, yes, you will have a winter project. As I'm sure you know, replace the clutch while in there.
But I would resign myself to replacing it.

When I say I can hear the thow out bearing I mean a constant hissing type sound. Very slight and a bit louder as the pedal is depressed.

If I were you, I would plan on taking the transmission out very soon. Clacking or metallic noises are much worse than the normal slight squeal or hissing that comes from any or all TR6 T/O bearings either when hot or cold, depending on the type installed. Of course, nothing matches the LOUD squeal of a Gunst on a Borg & Beck pressure plate, but that's another story. You may have a cracked or broken finger on the pressure plate or the bearing is just giving it up for the day, but either is not good and can lead to some major issues. If you are wondering what it should and shouldn't look like in there, go here and see what mine looked like when apart: https://www.74tr6.com/clutchreplacement.htm

Keep us posted. Also, plan on replacing the cross shaft bushings and possibly the shaft and fork as well, if worn at all when you have everything apart.

Thanks for tha additional info Dave. I've had that file for some time now, but I'm sure that others here will appreciate reading it. Good luck!

Well going ahead with the replacement and was just about to order the Magic Kit. One more question is that if clutch replacement problems are a result of poor replacement parts, has anybody experience in rebuilding the origonal if it is not too knackered?
