TR2/3/3A clutch pedal "snap" - TR3A

When I'm out driving, I *infrequently* hear and feel a "snap" when I push in the clutch pedal.

Clutch operates perfectly normally; no shudder, slip, grind, whine, etc.

The "snap" sounds and feels like someone taking a hammer and hitting the floorboard once, right behind the pedal. Feel it through my foot on the pedal, and only when the pedal stops at the max of its travel.

Only happens when you push the pedal down; no sound when you release the pedal. Nothing unusual down there behind the carpet.

Happens maybe once in 50 clutch pedal uses.

Sound familiar to anyone? Anything to worry about? I'm still taking it easy 'til the bent wheel "wobble" problem is resolved (got outbid on the TR3/4 wheels on ebay), but I'm feeling more and more comfortable driving beyond the "home fields".

I don't like the sounds of this. Literally!! Is there any shop that has a drive on lift that you can get it on and have someone push the clutch in and out while you listen from under the car if the noise is coming from inside the bell housing or front transmission case?
 
Tom - Before you go inside the bellhousing look at the front end of the clutch master cylinder. I had the same problem when I was at the Triumph races at Virginia International Speedway in June 2004. I found the problem. Look at the photo. Maybe you have the same problem.

I don't like the sound of that word notorious! But I did a search of every forum here and couldn't find a single post about "clutch fork bolt". Does anyone know any references for that? Is the clutch fork bolt the same thing as the taper pin?

Paul - I can put it up my own ramp and take a listen. But as there's actually a "feel" to the snap through the clutch pedal, it seems to my untrained brain that the issue is nearer the pedal and/or m/c than down in the clutch itself. It's like someone hitting the sole of my shoe once with a tack hammer.

Don - I'll take a look at that this morning. Thanks for the picture. Sure hope that's the problem. As a tangent to this, only the clutch m/c has that spring. The brake m/c doesn't have the spring. Is that right?

Tom,

The brake master cylinder clevis pin has that spring washer as well.

I don't think the clutch fork is your problem. As Don pointed out it's Probably something directly related to the clutch/brake pedal linkages.
 
Other than the small noise; does the clutch operate smoothly?
or does it feel "sticky" or "grabby" when you let up pressure
on the clutch pedal to move the car in first or reverse gears?

My car made a slight click sound when the two sheared off
pieces of the fork taper pin moved against each other. The
pedal action felt very "sticky".

Yes I was refering to to the clutch fork taper pin as in the Moss pic posted...596-076. Seems odd though that you hear the noise so infrequently if indeed that is the problem?
 
Resolved!

Per Don's suggestion I took a look at the clevis pin(s) at the m/c's.

There were no springs, no washers, the pins weren't screwed in the shackle at all ("loose" in the holes), and the cotter pin leg on the clutch side was - I think - getting caught on the mount bolt. The clevis pins showed no obvious evidence of wear (compared to Don's picture), so I've kept them in.

So I found some small springs and put them on the pins between the head side of the shackle and the pedal connector, screwed the pins in as far as they go, and replaced the cotter pins, bending the legs so they were around the pin and not dragging on that bolt head.

I'm assuming those clevis pins are screwed into the shackles as far as possible, right?

Took a nice 30 min drive with my neighbor and never felt that "snap".
