Clutch howl

Hi all, long time lurker, first time poster.

1979 Midget 1500, I've owned for about one year. I've corrected many past sins committed by the car's po's but one little issue is baffling me.

When the car is revving over 800 rpm or so, there's a howling sound that corresponds to pressing in and releasing the clutch pedal. It gets louder as you press in the clutch and is loudest when the clutch is fully depressed The higher the rev's, the louder the howl is overall. As the clutch is released, the howl gets softer until the pedal is returns to its normal position

The sound seems to be coming from the foot well area, so it might actually be coming from the pedal box.

This forum has been a huge help as many of my Midget's gremlins have been discussed in this forum (the flickering charge light for example.) I did not see this noise listed anywhere so I thought I would inquire before I start tearing into the pedal box and master cylinder.

Any insights would be appreciated.

Bad throw out bearing?

Thrust Washers? After All this is a 1500?

Well... definitely check the crank end float as Jim suggests.

Since itcoes and goes with the clutch pedal operation I would tend to lean towards the throw-out bearing, but not being that familiar with the 1500, it could also be thrust washers!

end float/thrust washer stuff was taken care of shortly after I bought the car. The howl was there both before and after the work.

I really did not think it was the throwout bearing as the sound really sounds like it's coming from the wheel well, but then again, the bearing would be right there as well.

I'll have to pull out the stethoscope to see if I can isolate the sound.

Does the clutch operate as it should? It does this even when no gear is selected? i.e. revving and putting the clutch in & out while not in gear?

I would think throw out bearing. Mine sings if I press the clutch pedal in too far. It is way past where the clutch disengages so I don't worry about it.
