clutch 1969 sprite

hello i have a 1969 austin healey sprite 1275cc i have a cluch problem i have very soft cluch peadle can not shift into 1st gear with engine running or any other gear can put in gear and start car and car will stay put with cluch in

i have installed a new cluch master cyl new slave cyl new steel line and a new rubber hoes and all copper washers and tethlon tape on the fittings

also have put in a new clutch new cluchplate new pilot bushing new bearing still works the same and a new push rod on the slave cyl and the fork is in the right way same as the cluch thanks for your help

The first and easiest question to ask is are you sure it is fully bleed, they can be a real bogger to do. Especially, if the Master and Slave are new.

Is the flexible pipe ok? If the cloth covering is broken it can swell on pushing the pedal and then the clutch doesn't disengage and the pedal feels soft.

My money says that there's still air in the system.

Bleed the master cylinder first: to do this properly, take an old section of your steel tube, and cut/bend it so that from the output port, it goes into the reservoir below the fluid level.

Slowly stroke it a few times to expell all the remaining air.

Reconnect the new steel pipe down to the slave cylinder and bleed accordingly.

This should solve your problem.

Whenever a master cylinder is being replaced, always try to bleed it on the bench before trying to bleed the whole system, and your life will be a little bit easier :wink:
