Today, I felt a bit more energetic and pretty much finished everything I needed as far as major boywork. I went all over the metal of the car with the DA sander and now it gleems all over. It got too dark so no pictures today. All I have left to do is now take the da sander and go over the hood (wich is not bare metal but my elder brother did the work on it years ago and he does excellent work so I will leave that as is) and go over the trunk lid with the da sander and install the hinges and install the hood and trunk lid. This is where I need advice........I was thinking of washing the car good after I get the lids back on and then blowing it off with an air hose and then taking a rag with laquer thinner and wiping the car down all over to remove anything. Then I will wash and squeegee out the new homeade paint booth and then put down plastic on the floor and roll the car in and put it up on jack stands and remove the wheels and start the taping process, then pray for warmer weather so I can spray the primer.
 
Do not wash. Tape it up. Use thinner for your type paint, not laquer. Go over it several times, then use a tac rag that you can get already made from the paint house.

SPRAY IT.
 
/bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/iagree.gif Do NOT "wash". The have a prep wipe that you can use. Water = NO good!! Blow it off first. Make sure that your compressor is not spitting condensation at the car while you are blowing her off.
 
Like everyone said, NO WATER. If you are not using a self-etching primer then you should get a can of metal prep as Boz mentioned, preferably made or recommended by your primer manufacturer and use it as directed. This cleans as well as etches the metal to provide a good tooth for the primer to bond to. If you are using an etching primer, some of them recommend to not use metal prep so read the instructions in either case. After that and especially if you wait a bit before priming then a tack rag would be a good idea.
 
Water = instant rust. At a level you can not even see.
 
BLOW it off (outside!) wipe down lightly with lint-free cloth and compatible thinner/paint solvent or tack-cloth...Spray!! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
 
I am going to use self etching primer first. I have a can of this stuff called prep all that I got at the car parts store, smells kind of like lighter fluid. I must wipethis car down before I roll it in because there is a film of grey dust all over it that won't come off with just air. I'm kind of concerned about dust that might be inide the car getting stirred up, but If I tape up good then that should not be a concern. I will blow it down and wipe it down again once its taped. Now, if it would just warm up a bit outside.
 
Kim, as I'm sure you know, but it never hurts to repeat words of caution. Ambient temp at which pain is applied IS important as to how the paint flows/goes on and its drying time. less than 58 - 60 degrees is not recommended for most paint applications! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

I've run into a bit of a road block with the boot lid and especially the hood. Read the DI-structions on the can of etch primer and it says to use it around 70 degrees. It is currently 52 degrees inside my basement. I could build a big fire in the woodstove down there and eventually get the temp up, but my basement doesn't get much above 65 degrees even in july cause its half underground. Thats in the deep end in the garage door end it goes up a big higher and lower depending on outside temp. Supposed to start warming up a bit on tuesday, so If I am ready, that might be the day for priming. Sorry, no pics still, feeling a bit down at the moment.
