I have noticed when I am driving near a guard rail, or anything else that will echo, I hear a click- click- click. I recently replaced the front wheel bearings. I am thinking it is probably a u-joint on the left axle.

I am not sure how to get to that I-joint. Will I need to remove the axle nut? I can't find any thing in the Bently book.

Thanks for any help.

I had a similar problem, it turned out to be the rear hub bearings.

Removing that big nut isn't going to help. See section 64.15.01 in the workshop manual, "Rear hub and driveshaft assembly, remove & refit".

I don't believe the factory considered that outer U-joint to be serviceable; you may find that there are no clips to disassemble it. If so, you'll need to find a machine shop that can convert it to a replaceable joint. Or just install the upgraded Goodparts axles. https://www.goodparts.com/shop/index.php?categoryID=20

airlifter, although the U-joint may not be your trouble, it is fixable. I would only do it if both U-joints on the axle were to be replaced. Take the wheel and the hub off which side you need, you will be able to take out the six bolts on the rear hub flange through a hole in the outer hub as you turn it to expose the nut. They are in aluminum so take care taking it off and putting it back in, check the torque. Take the four bolts on the inter u-joint flange off, the axle will now pull through the hub hole, you will have to stuff the rubber boot through from the inside. You will not have to pull the brakes, just pull the springs back out of the way or take the brakes off and replace while in there.
Now you can replace the u-joints. Watch out for the sliding axle, the rubber boot and wires will cut you. The axle is splined and has a key, grease those while you are at it.

Thanks for the input. I have also been advised that a trim ring or hubcap may be the culprit. Oh how I hope so. Probably will get to check it out later today. If that isn't the problem I guess I will be pulling the hub.

I checked the U-joints as best I could. They seemed tight so I thought I would try the simple thing first. I had the car up so I turned the left front wheel and heard a slight clicking noise.I removed the wheel and the hub cap was off. I repacked the bearings and replaced the cap. When I turned the wheel the cap would pop off when the wheel reached a certain position. I think the problem was that the cotter pin was extended too far. I made sure the pin was well down in the castle nut and the ends were bent well back. That seemed to solve that problem.

The other thing I found while checking the u-joints was a loose bolt at the drive shaft u-joint. I will admit that when I had the drive shaft out I reused the old lock nuts. (lazy, impatient, incompetent)? Anyway, I replaced all the lock nuts with new ones. I guess I will find out when I drive the car.

Thanks again
