Cleaning Wire Wheels Part II

Keoke,

Called Hendrix Wheels in ref to wheel cleaner. They have stopped selling the spoke cleaner. If wheels are not air dried after use, rust can accumulate in spoke nipples.

Ray

Hi Ray, Then go to British Wire wheel here on the coast and get it.I just checked the bottle to see if the souce manufacturer was identified but it isn't there.---Keoke

Seems like water would pool in the spoke nipples regardless if it was from rinsing wheel cleaner or dish washing soap. Perhaps it is the stronger chemicals used for chrome cleaning that get down in the threads that start the rust forming. What about using a thin clear silicone (there is one for windshield sealing that is flowable) around each spoke nipple opening to solve the problem?

Cheers,
John

john, the chrome wire wheels are beautiful but when they start to rust they realy look like dogy pooh pooh in a hurry,id rather have faded painted wheels then slightly rusted chrome ones, since i recently purchase a new set of daytons that have not yet been put on the car id like to do whatever i can to keep the rust from starting, the clear sealer you mentioned,do you suggest applying it from inside the wheel(top of nipple and threads) or squeezing it up inside from the outside,do you think one method is better then the other? once in a while spraying the entire wheel with a wd 40 type lube would help? sounds like ill be air drying these things everytime i drive in the rain as well. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

Hi Anthony, I was just thinking (dangerous, I know) that the spokes are SS so they are not likely to rust but the nipples are chrome plated steel (maybe they are SS too?). The nipple threads are not chrome plated since that would build up too much thickness, therefore the rust they speak of would come from those threads or around the edges of the nipples. The Dayton spokes are probably all ready sealed from the inside (tubeless right?) but just a small amount of sealer where the spoke goes into the nipple and around the nipple would keep the water out. You don't want to use anything that sets up hard since that would interfere with truing but a very light wipe coat of silicone would fill the opening. It will be a time consuming PITA to do, especially on 72 spoke wheels and best done with them off the car for access. I'd try getting the thin silicone (Permatex Flowable Silicone Windshield and Glass Sealer) and put it in a glue syringe to make it easier to apply (look under glue, oil, brushes at the following site for what a glue syringe looks like https://www.ehobbytools.com/ )

Cheers,
John

Well I know some of the high end European vendors have a proprieto
ary method for appling chrome to SS spokes, but I am at a loss as to why any one would want chrome on SS unless it is the economical advantage of less labor at the vendor and they look like polished ones initially.Show polishing requires each spoke to be done by hand, while plating is a batch process.??---Fwiw---Keoke

Hi John,In addition to the "chrome and gold wire wheel cleaner" there is a spray on "perservative sealer" also available from British Wire Wheel that you use after cleaning the wheels.I think it is a silicone based material but there is no chemical content listed on the bottle. However, it does keep their claimed contamination to a minimum.--Fwiw---Keoke
