Prep-Sol is the dupont brand I see it here on the shelf #3919S
 
Also, Kwik Clean is similar but not as harsh to questionable finishes.

Turns out Prep-Sol is composed mainly from mineral spirits so I guess mineral spirits ain't so bad after all. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Prep-Sol or equiv. is very good at removing silicones and you want to remove silicone or else you will get the dreaded 'fish-eye' (not to be confused with the 'evil-eye' but they are close cousins).

Thanks again for the tips. I'm just doing a Bugeye dash, which will be vinyl covered anyways, so I'm not to worried about fisheye or any other cosmetic blemishes, as they won't be seen anyways. The acetone will work well enough for this purpose, and I've worked with it before and understand the issues with it.

I'll keep an eye out for Prep-Sol, though. That sounds like some good stuff to have on hand.

No odor mineral spirit is a little safer than acetone and has a low flash point so it drys quickly withour residue. Denatured alchohol is also pretty safe.

As Trevor says, with any solvent, vent well, wear a mask, wear gloves... and if you have a space heater or dryer in your garage, do not run them until the fumes have cleared. Skin grafts suck.

Also vacuum cleaners have no place around fumes, their motors kick out sparks and all the air is sucked through the motor and its brushes. Voice of experience here.

I believe the Mythbusters once used a vacuum cleaner to make a jet engine, they just injected fuel and lit it off.

No but is sounded like a 20 ton elephant [censored] into one of those plastic walmart bags, just a big whoooom! I was vacuuming out a van of my friends while he was fidling with the carb cause the choke kept hanging on. It had swing open doors on the side and I had them open and was just vacuuming away, meanwhile he was using god knows what on the carb and we had that cover thingy off for the motor that is inside.
