Claying your car, before you polish

I only thought my car was clean.

I have never used clay before. Really didn't even know it was out there until a friend told me about it recently. The whole concept around clay is to use the tacky clay to strip your car's top coat of contaminates, ground in debris, etc., most of which you can't even see. But if you were to gently rub your hand on the surface you would probably feel.

There are several makers of clay for finishing your car.
the ones I looked at were Meguiars & Mothers.
I went with Mothers, as the clay bars were larger & Mothers has a great reputation.

Very easy to use:
1) wash & dry your car.
2) knead the clay into a flat, palm size piece. (NOTE: don't drop it or set it down on anything, you don't want it to pick up contaminates before you put it to work on your car).
3) mist on a spray lubricant/detailer (supplied with the clay) on a manageable area (3'x3')
4) gently slide the clay over the area in straight back and forth pattern.
You will feel it picking junk up as a gentle tug....then after you have cleaned one area, the clay slides freely over the lub. sprayed area.
5)Wipe and polish the area with a extra clean micro fiber towel.
6) fold the clay in on itself & knead into a flat piece again.

I was surprised at how much crud came off with the clay & how nice my paint looked afterwards.
one bar was enough to do my entire car.
I saved the rear wing aluminum stone protectors for last, as I knew they would be dirtiest.

The last step is a Meguiar M7 glaze & a final coat with Meguiar NXT finishing wax.

(the clay will pick up loads of stuff , especially off the lower sections of the body, you just fold it into itself and use the bar until you have no more clean surface)

Welcome to the fold.

Yeah, pretty much everybody who tries clay starts out "what the heck is that about?" and ends up "where have you been all my life!?" Wonderful stuff.

Just to add a couple tips for those who haven't tried it yet,

If you drop it on the floor, throw it away IMMEDIATELY. Don not ever, ever, EVER try to re-use it after it's been dropped on the floor. You will scratch the heck out of your paint.

With that in mind, when you first open the package to use it, tear the bar into two pieces and set one aside. If you drop one you can toss it and keep working.

Don't be tempted to use both sides of the clay pancake before kneading it. At first you might think you'll save time when you just flip it over to keep working. But you'll end up wasting a whole lot more time kneading it to expose fresh clay. If you use only one side, all you have to do is fold it once to expose fresh clay.

Noticed you have chrome wires. While you're in detailing mode, try Meguiar's Hot Rims for Chrome wheels. Spray on, rinse off and really takes the hard work out of maintaining wires.

Thx for the tip, Rick, I'll try that.

I am very satisfied with the Meguiar M7 mirror glaze & G12718 NXT generation tech wax 2.
(their product names sounds more like software upgrades rather than car polish, but they seem to work well).

Also the Meguiar pricing will not break the bank.

i tried that "hot rims". Surprised at how well it worked.
thought my chrome spokes were clean & bright before.....not so! But very bright now.
(However, the warning spray off with water in 15 sec. Max did give pause for thought.)

good stuff.

I Clayed my Corvette a few times back when I first got it - really amazing when combined with a good polish.
