Classic car insurance

I'm getting premium quotes from Heacock, Hagerty and J. C. Taylor to insure the TR6. Allowing some consideration for variations in mileage and use restrictions, should I just go with whoever is cheapest? What has your experience been?

Lewis - do an Advanced Search here on "insurance". You'll see a *lot* of comments.

My thoughts: if you're driving the car as a daily driver, you may have to go with standard auto insurance. If you want to set your own value on the car, and don't use it as a daily driver, you'll save a lot with classic car insurance.

I've been with Hagerty for several years. Great personal service. I also used J.C.Taylor, and feel positively about them also. But the personal service from Hagerty was the selling point for me. And their "Plus" service covers all my cars, not just the Triumph.

Lewis, be sure to purchase "agreed value" physical damage coverage, it assures that you'll get the appraised value of the car in the event of a loss.

I also use Hagerty for my '75 TR-6. Definitely go with the "agreed value." Their customer service has always been great.

I specified the value when I asked for quotes and was told that amount should not be a problem. In addition to classic car insurance, I'm probably gonna go with historic plates. They seem comparable with the insurance in terms of mileage/use restrictions and cheaper cost.
 
Lewis, also with classic plates you don't have to get the car inspected anymore, at least in VA. May be the same in MD.
 
I've been using JC Taylor since 1985. I've had a couple of claims, including a large one in 1989 when my 16 year old daughter remodeled the entire driver side of the TR250 while backing her mother's car into the garage. That claim was over $3K. The insurance adjuster came out and while he was doing his work he mentioned that he had a Mark II Jag at home and that he used to drive a TC when stationed in England in the army. I knew that I was going to be made whole. However, kidding aside, they never hesitated to make it right and I have been a very satisfied customer.

Those good old Virginia annual safety inspections. I lived in VA until I was 27. In fact, when I first started driving, they were every six months. I don't miss those inspections and I don't miss having to pay personal property taxes either.

Anyway, in MD we only get the car inspected once, at purchase. In fact, if you un-license the car you can re-license it with no safety inspection. All TR6's are old enough that no emissions inspection is required either.
 
Found the paper from MD MVA I pick up a few months ago.
Historic tags: the vehicle is 20 calendar years or older and not substantially altered. (No inspection.)
Street Rod tags: the vehicle is 25 calendar years or older and HAS been substantially altered.
Until I got this paper I thought a car had to be 25 years old for historic tags.

Does any body have any experience with Condon & Skelley?
 
Has Condon and Skelley many years ago on a XKE and BE.

They showed up the house one day unannounced to look at the vehicles and where they were stored. Found this odd, but there was a claim on the XKE years later and they were fair.

Note that this had to have been over 20 years ago.

it's just they are 40 bucks cheaper for my Spitfire, and I am wondering if the difference is worth it.

I think I'd choose reliability and reputation over $40, especially for insuring a car I really care about.

Actually, that's all we have to go by. Years ago, I had American Collectors insurance on my TR3 before I did the restoration. They may be the best, but I don't know how good they are, because I never put in a claim with them and don't know anybody that has.

After I finished the resto, I decided to go with Hagerty. The reason is that I've talked to people that have had claims with them, and from some of the members on this board that have had good experiences with them. Also, some of the members in the Triumph club have had good experiences with them. That's first hand experience, and that's what guided my decision.

I also liked the way I could option it as I felt necessary. One thing I picked was their 125 mile flatbed towing which also covers all of the cars here at the house. Nice peace of mind for me and the wife.
 
That was the first I had heard of Condon and Skelley. Fella here at work has his Factory Five 427 Cobra insured through them.

I also have a quote from Hagerty, which is where I think I will go because of the aformentioned reasons.
 
I'm very please with Hagerty and their service when I was hit by another car. The best service I've ever seen and I was in the new car dealer business for 25 years and have seen a thousand claims or more get processed. I never saw anything go as smoothly as my own with Hagerty.
