Well, it's almost time to get my LBC smogged and registered.

Can anyone recommend an insurance company for classic cars? I'm with State Farm right now, but they want $600 bucks a year to insure my '77 Midget. Nevada insurance rates are OUTRAGOUS... SO... Agent suggested looking into classic car insurance. Said it's much cheaper.

Any thoughts or recommendations?
 
I just switch mine to Garrety this year based on recomendations of other forum members.

I have no personal history with classic coverage through State Farm but some of my friends have collector car insurance through them and feel very comfortable with them. $600 may seem like a lot but take a look at what the policy requires and allows. I understand that State Farm does not limit or restrict the use of the vehicle but you should confirm that with them.

JC Taylor, Hagerty(and a couple of others) have great insurance prices. However, you have to weigh the price against your intentions. All will require the car be stored in a locked garage when not in use. All will require that you have another car as your daily driver. Some limit the use of the car to shows and other car events. Some limit your total annual mileage. After I looked at the terms and limits of use I chose Hagerty as they were lest restrictive on the use of the car.
 
I pay $250 per year with the AAA for my 74 Midget in So Cal. It did cause lots of confusion when trying to insure it as the VIN is too short for their computer apparently, meaning they have to manually enter the model information - what ever that means. For the first week of insurance I was driving a Peugeot! They still want to call it a 1973 though. I hope that doesn't cause any problems if I ever have a claim.
 
I have JC Taylor. They require locked garage storage, a second primary vehicle, mileage limit, use restrictions to car shows, club events and test drives. It is an agreed value for the car. I have never made a claim so I don’t know how they are to deal with. My rate changed from $700 to $58 when I switched from standard to classic and my coverage went up.
 
Since 1981 all Vin numbers have been I think 17 characters long. No one can handle the old ones it seems. Heck they can not even check if the vehicle was stolen as the data bases will not handle the input.

Good thing no one has old number 1
 
I use AON collector insurance (https://www.aoncollectorcar.com/), $100/year. Agreed value, no mileage or where-to-drive limits, must be in locked garage, can't be only car. Sent them some pictures and the agreed value I wanted, they said okay. That $100 is their minimum policy, when I had the TR4 and Buyeye together it was still only $100.

Haven't had a claim yet, but their policy folks have been nice and helpful.
 
My understanding is that you tell them what it is worth and include some photos, if they think it is reasonable based on their data they agree to it, Obviously if you are out of line with what you value the car at or have a custom that needs to be appraised then they guides don’t work. I just used the price I paid for the car. At some point, after some work has been done on the car, I'll go to the usual price guides (NADA, Collector Car Market) and place it somewhere based on the assorted valuations. Keep receipts as well, that would help.

Then I'll just call up AON and say that I need to up the agreed value. Don't expect much issue, as these cars are known quantities. They didn't require any sort of appraisal, just some pictures to back up the condition I claimed the car was in. Other insurance companies may do it differently.

Also, in my case I bought a driver so the price paid was pretty close to what I figured was a fair replacement cost. For a project, figure out the market cost to buy another car in similar condition, and that should be the value.

I use Haggery. When I bought the TD it was still in Cali. I called them up & told them my story. 5 minutes later that car was insured for 10G's so during transit to NY it would be covered. I have the same coverage.

I did the same with the GT and had it covered for 10G's also before I even picked her up.

Both cars cost about $175.00 a year. Can't beat that. I have limited use to around 1500 or 2000 miles a year to club events, meetings, shows or repairs.

Drew, Thanks! Never heard of AON. Checked them out and I agree, I like the fact that they have no mileage, no where to drive restrictions.

I think this is the way to go. Everyone else seems to restrict to pleasure use, which is fine, but define pleasure... If you use the vehicle to run an errand, I'd consider this pleasure, but I had one company say no, they wouldn't cover it if you filed a claim. Seems to me they may try to deny a claim depending on where you said you were driving from/to.

I've been happy so far, but all I've done is pay 2 years worth of premiums. No idea how they handle claims, but for $100 it seemed like a reasonable deal to me.

Only problem with throwing the groceries out the window is you could end up with "egg on your face"... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/lol.gif

I have used J.C. Taylor and Haggerty Insurance on my antique cars for over 30 years. I currently have J.C. Taylor on my 76 MG Midget. I have it insured for $6500.00 with 300,000/100,000/50,000 coverage, uninsured motorist coverage, no deductable comprehensive & collision coverage. There is a 2500 mile limit per year and you cannot use the vehicle as your primary daily driver. It costs me $78.00 per year for this coverage.

I'am in south Jersey I have 5k worth of agreed value of insurance it costs me 60 dollars thru Condon Skelly they limit 2500 miles per yr. yes to garage and pics were needed don't know about Vegas hope that helps
 
I use USAA, liability only on my MG's.
 
nationwide $35 mth....i have the only 74 "gene migit" in existance....guess i should call them /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
