CL scam self erasing email?

I waqs emailed through CL about something that seems somewhat legit as it included some local details but was a foreign buyer that would be in town next month visiting family. They asked for a phone number but I didn't reply. When I went back into my email, it was gone completely. Now I know it was a scam but how'd they do that?
 
Craigslist (I think).

Do you remember when E Mail meant, Economy Mail? You know, 2 cents! If you didn't like it and thought it threatening, you just threw it in the burn barrel! :highly_amused: PJ
