Cigarette Lighter

Folks, I apologize for so many posts, but as my car is in the shop, ideas pop into my head.

I purchased a navigation unit but have no place to plug it into my car. I looked in the TRF catalog, but didn't see anything. I was surprised that there wasn't an OEM part for this, especially during that era with cigarette lighters installed in most cars. What have you all done so that you can plug in accessories (or smoke cigarettes)? I would like a non-evasive (possibly hidden), or OEM solution. I want to pass this information along to the shop. All those Tr accessorys were positioned in the center console i believe if you don't have one i wouldn't know where you should proceed.Amco offered an aftermarket console as an optional accessory like the above for $300.00,of which i was fortunate to buy a nos one on Ebay & is presently in my car,(1980 Spitfire)I removed all the original factory setup console equiptment & installed this one which has a center 6x9 speaker a cigar lighter & ashtray & a hinged console to store stuff..And was a breeze to fit slid right in,Although i won that auction for $200.00 it was a beautiful investment & very rare,I presently have it on my website.

Add-on cigarette lighters should be readily available at your FLAPS; pick one you like and mount it somewhere. Mine is bolted to one of the dash braces behind the dash (where it's out of sight), but your TR6 will be different.

Or if you don't want to do anything permanent, something like this works too.

I mounted one in the 3A under the dash, way up front on the passenger side. Far enough forward, that you can't see it unless seated in the car.

I purchased a marine lighter socket that came with a rubber cover.

That's a great idea, a marine lighter socket. See, I would never think of this stuff on my own.

I want to stay away from putting in a new console, unless I can find one OEM. I put a search in on eBay. I think I'll go back to the TRF and VBL site and see if they have a console with cigarette lighter - I didn't do a search that way. I think mounting a socket under the dash is probably the best and inexpensive solution.

Shucks, I just drilled a hole into the center console on the bottom left hand side and installed a NAPA cigarette lighter right there. But then, I smoke. Works well to plug my cell phone charger into as well. Am sure it would work for any auxiliary plug-in. Make sure you run a separate inline fuse for the thing.

I mounted a generic lighter to the transmisson tunnel on the passenger's side well forward. It is pretty much out of sight and can be removed without leaving evidence.

Wal-Mart has a power outlet (lighter type) in their automative section for $2.95. I mounted mine up under the dash out of sight. Cell phones, nav systems etc, no problem.

Thanks guys. I've got the idea now. I don't snmoke, so perhaps the passenger side tucked under is a good place so the wires dangle on that side.

I searched and found this thread; am I to understand that my cigarette lighter in my '74 (between my heater knobs) was not factory installed? No wonder I can't find the spade connectors to "hook it back up." Seriously, do you guys not have one?

A guy I know removed the TR6 ash tray, put a 12v receptacle (cig. lighter) in the bottom of the ash tray, made the electical connection to the spare fuse, then put it back in the dash. When the lid is closed it's out of sight if that matters.

Although various factory spare parts catalogues did list lighters, I believe that most of them in cars sold in North America were dealer installed, likely having been sourced in the U.S. So "OEM" isn't really much of a factor here.

Remember to get a high amp one and run BIG wires to it if your gonna run your Xbox 360.

I installed mine in the glove box and dumb luck positioned it perfectly so that I can plug my Garmin GPS adapter into it and still close the glove box door. I run the GPS adapter wire through the glove box and then tuck the GPS plug end up over the passenger kidney pad.

I have a dual-socket one that is zip-tied up under the dash on the driver's side- to the steering column or wiring harness. I have to go by feel to plug/unplug, but it's not difficult. I wired it up onto the fusebox, which is just the other side of the firewall.
