So I was preaching in Barrie Ontario - 1 hour north of Toronto. In the church is a retired minister who, while not the minister of my church growing up was the minister of the other Presbyterian Church in town and we lived on the same street and I hung around with his kids. I do see him regularly but still, in the course of an announcement he mentioned he had been ordained for 61 years!!
Anyway, that's not the story. I'm standing in the pulpit and I glance at this fellow and think, gee, does the guy behind him ever look like my uncle. Sure enough. OK, not an actual uncle but my mother's cousin. He and my aunt (the actual cousin) and her sister had seen my name in the paper and shown up. Last time I saw them was my dad's funeral 10 years ago.
But even that isn't the whole story. I'm shaking hands after church and another couple come up and start talking about seeing my mother "last week." My mother had been at a birthday party and this couple were there. She (the wife) and my mother had been room mates when my mother came to Canada in 1956. She gave me some old pictures. I have included the most relevant one here. I don't actually think my mother is in the picture. The one standing is the aunt who stayed in Holland and the I'm pretty sure the one in the car is my aunt who came to Canada with my mother. BTW according to the picture, the car is called Charlie Brown.
All in all a pretty special morning.
