Doc, we've been on "church mouse mode" since about August '08 when the economy took a dive and took my customers' 401-K's with it. (my significant other of 30.5 years is a realtor...nuff said there, eh?). I had to do the unthinkable one year ago on the 21st of this month and "take a job" for the first time in 24 years. Last Wedsnesday we found out our company is pulling out of N.C & S.C. so I may see what an unemployement check looks like after about 40 years.
So, without envoking images of cigars or any other implications that would be nixed, let me just say..."I feel your pain...."
If you were up here, I've got a nice wall oven in the barn and a 28" slide in stove, too. Goal was to use them for power coating small parts. We'll see. (Haven't been in the barn to do anything since last August). Keep your chin up, you're not alone out here, but you <span style="text-decoration: underline"><span style="font-style: italic">are</span></span> in the <span style="font-style: italic">best of company</span>...

We're in better shape than some and not about to whine. "It is what it is."

The comfort level is fine and "maintainable" so-far.

What'd I miss???

Got laid off, ME TOO !!!!! Had to shut my business down. Was supposed to get a state job through a friend. Everything looked good and just got a letter 2 days ago that said, "GO AWAY AND LOOK FOR ANOTHER JOB!!!"

Right there with ya bro.....right there with ya !!!

Glad my toy doesn't burn much gas !!!

Well, Friday's now our offical last day, so T minus 2 and counting. Maybe I can get some time in on my toys in the barn... I hope. (Make up for not being in there for 16 months of not being in there).
Got a quart of Pagent Blue on the desk here, (need to shake it again...).

Hey, retirement is great!! The only bad thing about it is you have to wait so long for it. I think we should finish college & retire for 20 years then start working!

This thread got me to thinking. I'd be curious to know what our member spending habits are. For me my basic premise is that I would readily spend $50.00 for a tree but not for a pair of shoes. A tree is forever, shoes are not. I refuse to purchase an off the showroom floor vehicle. I'd rather get an appliance repaired rather than buy new as long as it is cost effective to do so. I think you all get it! No matter if I have the money or not I refuse to squander my resources. I prefer old items that work as opposed to new. Old items come with memories and I'm too old to make new memories from new items.

Didn't any of you understand that? Not even sure I did.

So - what's your spending habit like?

I'm so tight I'll squeeze a nickel till the Indian is riding the buffalo.
I'm supposed to be a car guy, but HATE spending money on my car.....GUNS on the other hand.....are a different story. I'll drop $1500 in a heart beat for a rifle but cringe at the idea of $1200 for a Sebring bonnet. Doesn't make sense.
I like spending money on car upgrades, just not $$ to keep it running.....unless it's an upgrade.

Wow! A man after my own heart!

I like coffee. Well, I am addicted to caffiene, there, I said it. Now I can deal with it.

I have perked mine in Faberware stainless 12 cup pots for 30 years or so. I was getting a guy to rebuild my pots for years, as they burnt up. Well he retired and went to Tenn. He has continued to sell me parts to rebuild my pots. I have not cleared my garge workbech down to the level where the two coffee pots and parts await another rebuild, though. (my auto shop is my 100 year old 4 stall carraige barn/ black smith shop, down the driveway, by the creek. It's knee deep in "stuff", too.) I look forward to clearing my bench in the attached garage off in the next couple weeks as I readust and gear myself up for a new direction in life...well, and good coffee once again.

I will rebuild any, or ruin it trying... :smile:

I do plant trees, by the way but also own several dandy chain saws... but that is another thread.

If you were really addicted you'd use an appropriate brewing device.

Kelly. I sold a Ruger Red Label over and under sporting clay 12 gauge I got for my 50th B.D. and bought interior parts for my Spits... ?sick?, perhaps...

I don't know, from what I've heard about Red Lables you might have done the right thing. I'm more of an assalt rifle/ tactcle guy.....but I LOVE shootin' clay pigeons. They're easy to clean, just a pain to cook and tatse like CRAP !!!

I'm one who'll MacGyver about anything I own just to keep it functioning. Doesn't matter if we have the money to replace it or not. I HATE disposing of 'things' jus' to have th' newest of whatever it is. I'm a lousy 'consumer'.

Tools are about the only exception. And those only if I can't find a particular one used.

Our water and electric use are HALF of what all the neighbors' are. We have a switch on the water heater, all lighting on dimmers. No A/C use, furnace gets turned on only if the inside temp falls below 60*... that's rare here. Shower head has a "switch" for cutting it off between soap and rinse. The hovel doesn't have a "yard", we call it "Indigenous Florida Scrub Landscaping". Diesela is the "newest" car we've ever owned. Wardrobes are mostly Christmas presents and gifted items others seem to want rid of, or they've girth-expanded beyond wearing 'em. :wink:

I have two working timepieces: The daily is a six year old analog Victorinox, the 'dress' one is a 36 year old Omega Seamaster from a BX in Asia.

We were just forced into replacing the kitchen electric range, it was in the hovel from 1980. Two of four burners recently kaput, lower oven element went out as the "last straw" (Thanksgiving turkey about half baked!). Used pieces would have been around $90~100, new replacements twice that... replaced the whole thing with a used one about two years newer for under $150. Knobs and NO clock or whizz-bang digital stuff to malfunction. 30-day warranty, delivery included and they haul'd off th' dead carcass... Extra points for bein' gray (over the last few years we've put in DIY cabinetry in gray). It will outlast ME.

We have TWO televisions. Both old CRT lumps from yard sales. Last computer we purchased was a 386-16. I now rebuild 'em from bits-n-pieces of clients' "old" ones, new components from my wholesale supplier. A-V electronics are from yard sales or in the case of the turntable, a dumpster. MacGyver'd with new belts and stylus.

Herself is a coupon Wizard: spreadsheet for keepin' track and an accordion folder for organization. Once even came back from a foraging expedition having been paid $2 for $50 worth of groceries. She's truly remarkable at it. BOGO is her middle name, she STALKS her prey. Documented average is $27 out for $75 worth of supplies in "real" money. :laugh:

Countertops & cabinetry DIY built mostly from "found" materials, concessions were laminate material new from a pal in the business and counterfeit Chinese acrylic "Korlan". Flooring, ceramic tile (700 sq-ft, DIY again) from another pal in the business. Additional 300 sq-ft "gifted" from a contractor friend from "leftovers" of a multi-home build.

To summarize, I *SQUEAK*. :smirk:

Huh?!? Honestly Don, I can "pass" as civilised. I'd wear actual shoes an' everythin'!! I promise! Mebbe even use th' 'convenience' if we'd get t' CAB consumin'... I hear there's even a flushy-thingie on 'em now. :shocked:

This stuff ain't done 'cause I'm "green", it's 'cause I'm ~CHEAP~!
