I just read that Mr. Marchionne of FIAT is talking seriously about acquiring Opel. My impression is that some Opel designs & platforms are critical to GM's US plans for 2011 and beyond.

FIAT? Who'd have thunk it?

I wouldn't want to play chess against this guy.
 
All these big automakers have up-and-down histories. Fiat has certainly had its share. Snatching up distressed assets like Opel and Chrysler may pay very handsome dividends in the not-too-distant future, I suspect.

We'll see, should be very interesting and fun to watch.

A whole new era in the auto biz, and we've got front row seats. I just hope we can preserve most of the jobs that have been lost here. :yesnod:
 
One thing Americans have always been in the past is ingenuitive. We may loose auto jobs, but as long as we're not legislated into welfare, we'll find other things to do, and come out all the stronger in the end.

My impression is that Opel is critical to GM's US plans. If they (GM) sells Opel to FIAT - for whatever reason - then I think FIAT will not only have Chrysler but will be a critical supplier to GM, at least for a while.

Anyway, I really would like to drive one of those FIAT 500 retros.

SAAB? Maybe. They could come out with a SAAB 93 retro.

I was under the impression that Hummer (the brand making restyled GM SUV's) was simply going away. GM already makes good trucks and SUV's, so they really don't need Hummer as an expensive boutique brand.

Well, I'm sure GM would love to something out of Hummer but I bet it just ends up going away.
