The other day the trim just popped off. Made a big ting noise. Now I can't figure out how to get it back on. Is the trim cosmetic? Should I worry about the windshield falling out if I continue to drive the car? The car is a 1974 XJ6.
The trim itself does not hold windshield in. Being a Series II model are there holes in the trim? Three sections with 2 holes evenly spaced? Like in the middle and on the right ( looks like 2 holes) in area of screwdriver handle. . There are pieces that cover these holes and have threaded rods 1/2" that go thru rubber and are attached from inside by bolts, these keep windshield from popping out. Dent in roof if extended near windshield will cause problem, Since it is raced or used in some sort of performance driving I would do something to secure windshield to prevent a situation at track. Like make a bracket on edge of windshield and screwed thru body.
Yes there are holes in the trim but nothing there to hold the trim down. That would explain why the trim popped off. I bought the car 8 years ago and am pretty sure there was never anything holding the trim down, well except for some screws holding the trim on on the lower portion of the windshield.
