CHROME RING, shift lever grommet ....?

It’s supposed?????? To fit around the collar of the rubber grommet at the base of the gear shift .
you will need thumbs like a cobbler and muscles like Arnold Schwarzenegger to get it in place or you could do Like I did and just toss it in the unused parts bin .

It goes on the rubber boot that covers the hole in the gearbox cover for the shift lever. I used to have one, but I removed it when I installed the lever-mounted OD switch. In this photo, it would go where the bottom tie-wrap is. It's nigh impossible to fit after the boot is installed, I always fitted it on the boot first, then slid the boot down over the lever (a little silicone lubricant helps). I think it would go either way. There's some debate over how the factory fit the boot--I think the consensus was 'n-i-p-p-l-e down'--but I usually install the boot 'n-i-p-p-l-e up' because they seem to last longer.
