Chrome Polish and glass scratch repair

Oh wise ones. I just spent two hours polishing chrome trim around a window. It was pitted and very dirty. While it is shiny now, still with a few scratches that I am going to live with, I think the pits will come back. Is there any wax or other type of sealant that you have used on chrome to keep the pits from coming back?

Statement #2- I spent 4 hours yesterday trying to polish out scratches in some of the windows. (Not front windscreen). While they look cleaner, I can't say the scratches were removed. I even tried using 2000 sandpaper and then polish but not much success. One spot I used 400, 500, 800, and back to 1200 with not much success. The videos on youtube make it look easy, but I am not a believer. Yes, I did have some of Eastwood glass polish to use also.

Jerry - this is interesting. I've never heard that chrome pitting can be polished out. How'd you do that? What materials, technique, etc.?

Also, I tried the EAstwood technique myself, and didn't have any luck other than "shinier" scratches.

I used chrome polish and a buffing wheel in addition to a green bar on the buffing wheel. At this point the chrome looks ok. But I think the corrosion will come back.

Thanks Jerry. So the polish, buffing wheel, and green bar eliminated the bumps and pits?

Any possibility to show a photo?

Only the after and it does not show much. I would call it 3 foot nice chrome. If you get close there are still scratches. But it is much better than it was prior to starting.

I have used the SiO (Prime) coating from these guys and am very happy with the result

Packages are small, so you could have them shipped from the Netherlands or the UK

Remember, "Chrome" plating is really a Nickle coating with the chrome being a colorless protective coating over the nickle which protects and gives the nickle a slight bluish tint. To remove a scratch you have to remove the coating on the nickle and doing that,(nearly impossible), you expose the substrate to the elements and rust. If the scratch is microscopically deep enough, the nickle/copper is scratched also. Only fix is to have the part replated.

I spent hours and hours polishing glass with a purpose made kit and polish, I think it was from Eastwood, like somebody else said, I just ended up with a little bit shinier scratched glass, the scratches would not go away.

When I got my 59 BE the windshield had windshield wiper scratches on it that I could not get off. I had this guy come to the house and he used a diamond buffer on the windshield and took about two hours going over the windshield and eventually the windshield wiper scratches went away. it was a lot cheaper then buying a new windshield and cost me $100.

Hi Jerry,

I`ve used a "Very Fine Grit" (1000) Steel Wool on removing scratches on chrome items very successfully. It won`t remove "Pits" as I don`t believe anything really can but it will eliminate as much of the "Scratches" as possible without removing the chrome. You may have to work on it periodically for best results. Then apply a car wax for protectant from corrosion.

I don`t have any suggestions for the windscreen or glass.

Have Fun,

Russ
