Chrome bumber comversions

A question to anyone of knowledge. My 18 yo son bumped a P/U truck and did some damage to the front end of my 79 mgb. Since I have been thinking about doing the chrome bumber conversion, I priced the difference between the rubber bumber replacement and the conversion kit. Conversion kit is less expensive. Now to the question...I need to replace at least one fender due to damage that cannot be repaired, can I replace both fenders with 70-74 fenders and avoid the welding and style change issues with the post 74 fenders? Any help would be appreciated.

Yes you can replace both of them with the earlier fenders.

If you have not lowered the car you may find that it will look better with chrome bumpers after it has been lowered. The RB cars are one inch higher than the CB cars.

Malcom, having done the conversion without the kit, I think you could save considerable $'s by doing it yourself. It involves some cutting and welding and fabricating some brackets in the front and rear which could be farmed out to anyone with a plasma cutter. I have files showing the front and rear brackets if you want them, drop me an email.

Actually it's more than an inch; I can't remember what exactyl it is but it's either 1.25 1.5 or 1.75 inches. I'm gonna lower my B 2" once I get time and money to do it.

Tom, thanks for the info and link to your sight. Went there and really liked the look of the modified front with the spoiler. How hard is it to convert the rubber bumper to that look considering the new grille?

Malcom, you cut back the mounts for the rubber bumper to the facia level and about 2 inches more into the grill opening. The modified front end bolts on the same mounting points as the front valance. Not a difficult conversion.The openings for the turn signals are either eliminated or modified to accept the older style.If eliminated the signals can be mounted on the new bumper.

I converted my 78 about 4 months ago using the spoiler/bumper that Tom sells and it fits perfectly. You can make all the cuts to the front frame rail using a angle grinder or a cutoff wheel, of course a plasma cutter is the easiest to use. I will attach some pictures of the finished product and if you look closely at the picture with the bonnet up you can see the cut down bumper frame rail through the grill slats.
