So, I always have to tell my daughter what I want....this year I want a small GPS for my car = about a 4.3" screen so I can see it easily....would like the voice to tell me street names not just turn in X seconds or X yards like my present one does....want US & Canadian maps...would only like to have her spend $150 or so...

Suggestions?
 
Cheapest I could find that does street names was $250.

There is another way.
Get a mobile phone that has GPS, such as telenav that speaks street names, that's around $150....
 
I have a TomTom One that doesn't do street names. "Take the second right" works just as well for me as "turn right on ??? Street".

While I think that the Garmin's handle POIs a bit better than the TomTom, I don't need to be told that it is recalculating; the TomTom just quietly gets on and does it.
 
:iagree: Just got a new phone with GPS nav system. It's great. Hopefully I'll never get lost where I can't get a cell signal.

I have the most basic Garmin Nuvi (about $160) and I really like it.

But as I found out when I rolled into Ontario at 10 AM two days ago (to buy a car), it doesn't have the Canadian map in it.
No big deal (I can still read road maps), but it never ocurred to me that Ontario wasn't in it.
While the Canadian border officer was giving me directions, he suggested that Garmin might have a free upload for my unit (I'll have to see about that).

Anyway, the slightly more expensive Garmin 225 Nuvi (about $220) has Canada and PR in it. You can find it HERE~.
 
Tony, find the model that does what you want and "help" her with the balance beyond $150....? :smile:
 
CVS Drugs has a GPS for dummies on sale for $79. using the discount card. Has voice. I got one for my daughter. The wife got one for us last year Becker was the brand and got it from Office Depot. It was on sale for $99.00.

We bought a Garmin Nuvi 260 last January - at the time it was the cheapest one that spoke street names & included Canada. The street database is surprisingly accurate & handled a recent Canadian trek well. It's great in the car and we've even used it in the boat & walking.

Current street price is just under $200. Map database updates go for about $60 & appear to come out about once a year.
 
She's capable of going to $220 or higher but I don't think I'd use it enough to have her spend that much....I do like the Garmin Nuvi but the TomTom might do what I need.

The Delorme I have now tells me to turn <span style="font-style: italic">" right in 20 seconds, 10 seconds, go back"</span>.
 
I got a TomTom on sale this summer for the TR6, since I have built in Nav's in both Taurus's. The only problem is hearing it talk with the top down and engine revving, even with the volume up, but the readout shows you the way. I got mine at Staples for $125.

The sales will be starting now and she may want to wait until the day after for even better savings.
 
She's planning on Black Friday shopping...

My exhaust is louder than it should be and with the TomTom at about 75% volume I can hear it fine.
 
I thought that subject was being discussed on the GM rant-it gets "curiousier & curiousier Dinah" :jester:
