Choking My Midget...

I was wondering how tight the choke is supposed to be? I just accidentally pulled the knob off my choke cable. Can the springs get tighter with age? (they are 37 years old) Also, when you pull the choke, how far is it supposed to pull the jets down?

Thanks,
-Tony!

Tony,
Sounds more like you had a loose knob or the choke cale might also be 30 some years old and is just gone bad or sticking. The springs probably aren't the issue. Could also be gummed up stiff linkage and all. Is this the first time you have run it this year? Might need a good ckeaning and lube .
from what I remember on my 70 , the jets pull down about a 1/4 inch or a little more. Don't know if that is about right - but mine seems to respond OK like that.

Hey George! I saw the video on YouTube promoting the car show.

Believe it or not, it was a new cable - first time I used it! It did not feel that tight. I did notice that the new knobs are more rubber, as opposed to my old one that seemed to be a harder plastic.

Ahhh, get your money back and try to source a better one.

Supplier already sent me a new one... we'll see what happens. If it happens again, that is what I'll do.

Hi Trevor,
Yeh , one of the guys in the club had taken some video last year and put it all together to help promote the show.
We are back in the same location this year again - hope for a good showing. There is an info page for the show on our site - a little background and some new info. This years T shirt design is up there now as well as a pre-registration sheet.
Cincinnati British Car Day - July 15th - https://www.bccgc.com
Might as well get a plug in about the show here.

George

I'll try to be there if I can get my Midget repainted by then. I smashed the front of it. oooops.

And to keep the thread on track. I switched to a T-handle choke cable and I like it better (though it does not look original).

I'm told that AHSpares has proper choke cables.

BTW Louisville Car Show is first weekend in June (MG is featured Marque)

George -

Glad to hear that the show is staying at Harbin Park. Beautiful venue!!!

I was looking at the posts and I was thinking the same thing about being in the lock position.
The knob on mine is hard plastic. I had to replace mine some years ago cause the locking part gave up and had to hold the choke out till it warmed up- does sound like just a bad one.
Tony, do you know there is an MG club in Dayton - if not , get ahold of Skip Peterson - e-mail is MGBSkip@aol.com I believe. They put on a great show the first Saturday in August.
Hope you get your problem solved.
George

No, it was not locked. I have been thinking about switching to the t-handle if this does not work. We'll see!

George, I heard that there was a club in Dayton... thanks for the info.

Tony
