Choked on Plinth Question

Thanks in advance. I am once again stumped.

I am mid-wiring harness install 69TR and need to remove the switch plinth. Golly, all the knobs were fake and glued on with contact cement............

Except for the choke cable pull knob. I have the Bentley Blue book , the TRF twin sets of books, Victorias Secret cataloge, the CD of everything known of TRs and for the life on me, I cannot seem to get that choke pull knob off so I can remove the plinth.

Can someone please give me an idiot proof, step by baby step instruction for this simple task? Remove the knob?

I have tried pushing and turning it; pushing and quickly pulling it; turning in backwards. No luck. Everything threaded is apart in the assembly. It is the knob I cannot remove from the cable itself.

Tinster, there is a hole in the rear of the knob, actually almost under actual knob portion that will allow a very small spring loaded pin in the cable to seat into the hole, thus locking it on. Look at your other cables from which you have removed the knobs and you'll see what I mean.

Insert a small screwdriver, nail or awl in the hole to depress the pin, which will allow you to remove the knob. You can loosened the nut to allow the cable to turn to where you can see what you're doing as the hole is on the bottom of the knob if it is aligned properly.

Um, I *think* TR6 are the same as the earlier cars I'm more familiar with.

I know TR6 era cars started using more and more rocker style switches, but most of the pull type switch/control knobs have a small hole on the underside, near the narrow base. Push a nail, thick wire, paper clip or similar slim object into that hole and you will release a spring that retains the knob on it's shaft.

Hope this works on TR6.

Indeed this is the way these knobs are supposed to attach to the shaft on the cable. Assuming these are either the OE knobs or good quality replacements. Beware: There were on the market for a while some really cheap and funky replacement knobs circulating out there (cannot for the life of me remember which vendor I got them from) that were jamb-on knobs with jamb-on shafts. Actually, the whole assemblies were horribly made and were not meant to ever be reused. They actually had a very small dimple in the area of the hole that holds the spring pin. I am sure you don't have these. If you do, you will have to break everything off. I am sure that yours are OE though. Good luck.

Hi Tinster, I just got through doing this and I could not find a hole in the back of my choke knob to remove it. All the rest of the knobs on the plinth did and came off just as described above. I wound up loosening the nut on the back of the plinth, disconnecting the cable at the carbs and pulling the whole cable out through the front. I don't know if I have an aftermarket choke cable assembly or not but this worked for me and wasn't really a big deal.

I guess I need to start a new topic on removing and refinishing my wooden dash. I thought it would take a weekend and instead I'm still working on it a month later.

Thanks for the advice! I didn't even have to look for the tiny hole. Everything else on this old car has been half-assed put together by the POs so why not the choke assembly.

Nope no small hole was found. Just a bunch of epoxy glue. The carbs and intake manifold are presently off the auto and in the hands of carb magic man Jeff Paltech of Micropolishing in Ohio.

Aero-I thought about simply pulling the choke cable thru the firewall but did not have the cajones to do so. So I puuled them thru and now it looks like I will be purchasing a new choke assembly.

Sreabge indeed: Once removed, back side of the plinth, I found the original switch/knob holes filled with liquid wood filler and sanded smooth!! Fake knobs glued to the front.

Aero- My wood dash wrecked by the PO and hopless for restoration. I am meeting tomorrow with a fine, exotic wood craftsman to discuss a new dash and wood inset for the plinth. We have over 100 hardwoods here on the island that are not exported. Very tiny harvest from time to time. I'll post my wood dash meeting as a new topic.
